Eizo vs. Dell. Completely disoriented

Three weeks ago I was totally sure about my next display to get, new FlexScan SX2462W. But just when Im ready to buy, I heard about the new upcoming Dell 27 @ 2560x1440, and I get lost about choosing between them at roughly the same price (eizo from pricejapan).

EIZO SX2462W
Pros: 16:10, 98% of the Adobe RGB, Perfect sRGB mode, 16-bit internal processing, great color match and uniformity, just Eizo...
Cons: 1920x1200, no HDMI (2xdvi + displayport)

Dell U2711
Pros: 2560x1440 res., HDMI (as well the other ones dvi and displayport)
Cons: 16:9, wide gamut, imput lag, lottery about the panel final performance, tipical dell launch issues, waiting for revision, etc, etc...

Dont know what to do, Im totally confused. I love that res 2560x1440 on a 27 screen, large workspace, but definitely hate the 16:9 ratio, and the final quality/performacen of Dell against Eizo despite they share same manufacturer panel. 30 size is definitely out of the equation for me.

I give the display on a PC very much importance, if not the most. Dont care to spend a little more in this main part above the rest, to get the most pleasant experience in all aspects every minute I stay in front of it. My needs are for all kind of use, OS tester, web browsing, writting, amateur photo/video editing, and a little less gaming and video watching.

Hello baco80.

I think this is a knowledgeable question. I'm sure you would make a good choice without other people's input.

If you have to buy soon I think I would choose the SX2462W. However, starting in March NEC is rolling out the PA series in the U.S which includes a 2560*1440* 27" model. These should include colour control features equivalent to a ColorEdge unit.

Yeah, I knew about the Nec, but the fact is that had no idea about when it will be launched; yours is the first date I've read. Thats why I did not put it into the options, I really need a new display, but march... dont know, sounds too far right now.

Didn't know neither it will mount a 2560x1600 panel, I supossed it would be the same dells 16:9 ratio one. Are you confident about this. If this is right maybe i could do a big effort and waiting for march... dont know. Was happy when I just had the eizo choice, but when you think on invest a grand on a display, it turns out mandatory to bear in mind every single interesting alternative for the price.

1. If you are serious, you need to dig the ground looking for this monitor. ASAP.
2. Why Eizo? They have same issues as any non-Eizos. You just pay extra for nothing (in comparison with NECs).
3. PA series will include 2560x1600 (PA 301W).

Why do you care about HDMI ?!
In an expensive monitor that really shouldn't be anything to be bothered by.

And isn't there only one 27" panel with 2560x1440 resolution? If so there really can't be any panel lottery. Sure, Dell has done it before but that doesn't mean that all their monitors are subject to it. Their 30" displays have been available for many years and they have never been anything but IPS, as an example.

I've heard of a specification via chromaticity values - is it possible to have any control about the luminance component too (I think it has a 3D-LUT)?

Dont know what to do, Im totally confused.
The SX2462 is a good display with extensive featureset. If you don't need the display immediately you could wait and see what DELL and NEC are offering in the very near future. Unfortunately there really seems to be a little "panel lottery" with the H-IPS LG panels but you must realize that many customers are also very content (and don't write about this impression in a forum). You could cast an eye on the Eizo CG series but that would probably overshoot the mark a little.

Best regards

The beta utility only shows x, y configuration, so no luminance value can be set based on this picture:

EIZO ColorNavigator window here showing the same:

Is it a fault to not include a Y value for the purpose of "colour space emulation"?

Yes it is the same, but you can take a ICC profile as reference (primaries (defined through XYZ tristimulus values), gradation and whitepoint are "extracted" and used as parameter then).

Color is definied through hue, saturation and luminance. The NEC should be able to handle this (I think it has a 3D LUT like the CG) - the question is only how and if this is implemented via software. Maybe you can also set a profile/ working color space as reference - I can't make out details in the screenshot.

Sorry but no news for 27" 16:10, If I decide to wait, dont know about get the new PA 24" !6:10 or 27" 16:9.

Best bang for the price, better than an eizo of the same price?

Is worth the price difference between these new PA and the upcoming too new SpectraView?

After doing some matrix calculations I must admit that it is sufficient to only define the chromaticity values of the primaries if you imply linearity (which is applicable here). With help of the chromaticity values of the white point you can calculate the appropriate luminance value for each primary. It would nevertheless be nice to use a ICC profile as reference - especially if you want to achieve a gradation that is not selectable via preset (you can often only choose between number values and not sRGB or L* for example).

You might want to get a Dell U2711. I mean, you cannot go wrong with Dell. Their return/exchange policy is unbeatable. If for any reason you won't like it, just send it back. I would also get a NEC over Eizo IMO.

this, even if it has "typical dell launch issues", they'll stand behind it and fix it under warranty (honestly aside from Samsung and NEC, I can't think of a more solid warranty, and Dell is certainly first among equals between the three)

honestly I've never known of a solid reason to get an Eizo over another brand, for the price you can start to consider very high end parts from NEC and perhaps even Barco, and for less money you can be quite satisfied with parts from Dell, Samsung, HP, LG, sometimes NEC, etc

I agree that HDMI is pointless to worry about for a quality monitor, it isn't a TV after all (DP is good)

all LCDs will have some degree of iNput lag, and generally speaking, better colors/contrast/viewing angles/etc has the trade-off of higher input lag

as far as 16:9 whining, there is no point, games and applications will do just fine with anything from 1:1 to 4:1, nothing really "cares", except some old legacy games (a lot of which can be hacked/modified) that are fixed to low res 4:3 and 16:9 or 16:10 will cause problems either way, so unless you have to have EVERYTHING fullscreened (which is just silly at >2MP), there isn't a whole lot of sense to "Death to 16:9"

Thanks guys, have things fully cleared up now. I've decided to go for the upcoming NEC PA301W :D

no doubt NEC makes a good monitor, I'd suggest reading a few reviews over before pulling the trigger, but it shouldn't have any glaring issues (you know, aside from the detail of price ;))
