The next time someone tells you that you need your 8 hours you can emphatically tell them it’s up to your genes. It seems your genetic makeup and how you feel through the day has more to do with it than any old wise saying.

The US National Sleep Foundation suggests seven to nine hours a night is advisable for adults, and a survey it conducted in 2002 suggested three-quarters of Americans had problems sleeping and a third were so sleepy during the day their activities were affected.

I work at night, so my sleep is screwed up by default. I do try to get 6-8 hours of sleep during the day. 7-8 hours is about my comfort zone.. Any less and I'm exhausted, any more and I'm fatigued. Recently I slept nine hours and after I woke up I kept feeling like I needed another hour.. sucked having to go to work like that. Thank goodness for Red Bull 8)

Bachelor party last night....4 hours of sleep...and I have to make a speech tonight because I am the best man:(

As a college student I am lucky to get 6 hours a night.

6 hours in a long night of rest for me. Most of the time I pull around 4. Use to sleep even less. Never had an issue due to it.

I slept 13 hours the other day, non-friggin stop. Am I teh winnar!?

Pfft, I do that every day in the summer. No school (and at that time no work) gives lots of sleep, and lots of daylight wasted (hah, waking up at 2:00pm)

I'm always tired. Doesn't matter if I get 8-9 hours or 6-5. I usually get 6 or 5 hours of sleep and make it through the next day alright. What's funny is that the most awake I've been recently was when I only had 2 hours of sleep, had only a cup of coffee when I woke up and didn't even doze off until bed that night.

i usually sleep for about 8 hours if left to my own devices, but i fall into a 3am to 11am sleep schedule.

I usually get about 6..and Im fine with that...I only sleep in on weekends, and even then i only get maybe 8-9...

Well thanks for the story by Dr. M I Obvious PhD.

Seriously, anyone who's gotten 4-6 hours of sleep, you feel like shit... no big shocker there
You get a full night sleep you feel better.

Look to the Japanese if you want to know if working your ass off getting very little sleep is healthy... here's a hint they have a term Karoshi (Death by Overwork).

The whole point of the article was that there isn't a broad definition. 4-6 hours might be perfect for some and be a full nights sleep.

Did you even bother to read the article before you commented?

I skimmed through it briefly.

The point I gathered from it was somewhere near the end where they mentioned something along the lines of "Even though our schedules have changed, our " oh screw it let me just quote the damn thing.

"In the past century, we have reduced our average time in sleep. Though our society has changed, our brains and bodies have not. Sleep deprivation is affecting us all and we are paying the price."

Now I see what you mean, do you want to believe the English sleep center or the US sleep center. I'm all for going with the side that says you need 7-9 hours. Does everyone need that? No, never said that, but much like the guy with the porn star like stamina in the sack, the guy who only needs 5 hours a sleep is well in the minority.
