I've been hearing things about EFI. It's a BIOS replacement on motherboards that allows windows to start up very quickly. Does anyone know if it is out on any motherboards yet? What ones? If its not out yet, when is it coming out?

BIOS replacement?
that doesnt sound good.
So what, do you modify BIOS settings from within windows?

Intel is working on the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) which would act as a pre-OS environment with its own high-resolution graphical user interface that sits between the BIOS and the optering system.

EFI will handle low-level tasks like initializing the chipset and busses and supply a set of APIs and services. It also supports utilities on a special partitioin that would give you the ability to repartitioin the hard drive, make backups, or boot different OSes.

It is suppost to work in conjunction with Phoenix's new BIOS changeover to CSS. CSS will handle all the functions of today's BIOS with the addition of a built-in TCP/IP stack, wireless support, and better support for instant-on technology.

Both EFI and CSS have the ability to enable digital rights management features. This would prevent people from using illegal copies of software.

DRM isn't suppost to be built into EFI. Firmware would merely activate copy protection routines on request. And Phoenix says DRM would be avalable on an opt-in basis. If you dont want to use DRM, you dont have to. Of course, you also wont be able to use any applications that call for the DRM to be on.

CSS is expected to be avalable on machines as early as this spring while EFI probably wont come until 2006 when Longhorn becomes available.

*Information from this months issue of MaximumPC :)

From what I have read about it, it will be incorporated into the next OS released by MS in 2006 (Code Name Longhorn) it will not be backward compatable with existing OS's or MoBo's so don't start salivating quite yet.

So it's part of M$'s plan to make Longhorn piracy free......, I see.

Thanks.

PS: Burningrave, answer my PM.
