Hi,

I'm looking for more power efficient system and I've searched and read that with Raspberry it might be to laggy and slow for my needs.

The systems needs to do:
1. Run sabnzbd to download stuff at 30mb
2. Extract them (Unrar)
3. Stream content to network (1080p)

I taught of getting Intel N2800 based system, since its very low TDP (10w) @ 129$ (with PSU)
But will it be enough for doing above ?
I've tried the above over Raspberry and i got 5gb extracted in 25minutes! and download jumped between 1.5m and 100k, so i guess its just not enough.

Another option is that I can get i3 3220T in 60$ here, so i guess its equals same in $$ but will it be same power consuming ?

I would wait for Haswell and get a non T processor. Haswell will have an even lower idle power than ivy-bridge. As for the "energy efficient" T processors you have to understand what these are. They take a regular chip and put a frequency limit on it and underclock and undervolt such that it stays under a thermal limit. This may or may not be more energy efficient than just using the regular chip and letting it hit idle faster..
 
Haswell are the more powerful ones, doesnt it ?
Will we see a Haswell on the i3 too ?
 
Yes, HWL will come in i3, i5, and i7 flavors. Likely even Celeron and Pentium models based on its uArch.
 
look into a brazos system for your needs...
I'm not seeing if you have a size constraint in your system, but you can pickup an older brazos netbook to run what you need like the lenovo x120e for less than 200 on ebay. plenty of power compared to a raspberry pi. Intel NUC is probably too expensive to compare.
 
I agree with the wait until a i3 haswell regular chip... More than enough power for your request and very high efficient power management. Also could be used in power saving mode to reduce even more the power consumption and keep enough power for your requirements.

I would expect any ivy-bridge CPU to be significantly more efficient than your CPU at the same load. Meaning even though an ivy-bridge has a higher TDP than your 620e it will finish the job 2 to 5 times faster than your CPU returning to the idle state that 2 to 5 times faster.

My sarcasm meter always malfunctions.. Anyways ZodaEX had quite a few threads about finding an upgrade for his CPU that was more efficient and cheap. I thought we were reliving those thoughts..
 
microcenter has Celeron G1610 for $35. A Haswell would be more efficient but you would have to wait a while for a celeron or pentium version. Also for motherboard prices to drop...
 
I guess any Sandy/Ivy Celeron/Pentium or i3-xxxxT paired with a basic board would be quite efficient.
Like the DH77EB from Intel which I bought.
Found someone with that board and:
i5-3570K stock
OCZ Gold 1333mhz 1.65v 2x2GB
Sandisk SDSA4DH 32GB SSD (mini pcie size)
And the PSU was a GS600 Corsair. During Windows installation his power meter fluctuated between 19-24w..
He then swapped his PSU for a picopsu-150XT (don't know what adapter he used) and his rig idles at 13w.
Now if he could change the vcore then I believe his rig could quite easily idle at 10w or below.
He also has 1.65v ram. He said he would love to try some 1.35v ram.

But I'll be pairing my DH77EB with a Pentium G2120 and 2x4GB 1600 CL9 1.35v.
On my to-do list is picoPSU and HD7750 or HD8xxx equilevant.

E: tl;dr, nowadays motherboard affects the idle power more than the cpu..

You don't need that much perf after all. Bad comparison but like if I'd drop my 3770K to 1.6Ghz and start extracting a rarred 50gb iso with winrar (affinity to 2 threads) from HDD1 on my computer to my 2x1 RAID0 I don't see it going above 4-6% usage.
Make sure you get a MB with a decent NIC since you're streaming stuff. Or you could get some cheaper MB and add EXPI9301CT or something equilevant. I've one those and it must be one of the best discrete NIC's I've bought.

What is your budget limit?

I assume power costs are high in your location. What is the cost per KWh so that commenters know how to balance long term power cost vs. initial purchase cost.

Should I go for Intel® Core™ i5-4570T Processor ?
Saw that its 35W TDP.

KWH here cost 0.12$
 
thats a $200 processor vs a $35 one

I would get the cheap one. It might use 1 or 2 watts more an hour so you never recoup the difference even if you used it for the rest of your life

I can get the 4570t for 80$ (dont ask:) )
however I see the cheapest MB is 120$ here, Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3
maybe i should wait abit longer

I can easilly max out my 2120T while unpacking/repairing NZB's using sabnzb, mainly it's the repairing(par2) that maxes out the system.

A 4570T might be a little overkill, however at that price it is definitely a steal!

In fact, the 2-core, 4-thread configuration of that i5-4570T effectively makes it an i3 with Turbo Boost added (actual i3s do not have Turbo Boost).
 
But for my use which is "NAS" like, for less then 100$, TDP of 35W, Doesn't it fit ?
Or maybe I should wait abit more for "pure" i3 (and maybe pay even less)
 
The 3220T makes for a badass little NAS CPU.

Sabnzbd/unrar/Plex Media server have absolutely no problem.
 
If you can get the 4570T for $80, then get it. No reason not to at that price.

And, if you can get multiples at that price, then do that and sell a couple/few of them for a nice profit. :)

Alittle old but now i'm finally after selling my old computer parts.
as you said the 4570t is dual core in a 4 core mask.

How is the i5-4570s? I can get it from work at about the same price (88$)
while not on load, will it be low enough on power ?

lol u guys would prob spend more on 2 gallons of gasoline than you save all year, but more power to you!

but in general, is it a good CPU ?
is it "real" 4 core or same as 4570t?
 
4570S is an underclocked 4570, no difference besides base clock and lower turbo bins. I would stick with Ivy for a low power system, all of my 3570k have been able to overclock mildly while undervolting resulting in much better efficiency.

Well for me it's more about reducing my heat output than saving power. I want my computer to run nice and cool and not vibrate at all from typical cooling fans.
