Say you wanna make your comp run more than 24 hours or even continually... aside from the obvious power usage what would be the effects?

Not standby or anything like that but actually running for that long? Reason im asking is that im interested in this whole protein folding thing w/ folding@home and ah... lots of p2p as well...

But i realize that power usage might be prohibitive. I understand that at the very least your comp needs to restart once and a while and teh haxxors will obviously be more dangerous while you sleep... But other than that what will happen? Hardware will age 2 times+ as fast? Fans will break even faster? what?

Some people will argue it will last longer if you leave it on. Just be sure it has good enough cooling and levae it on.

a pasty white complexion and loss of muscle?

I need a vacation from my 12 hours a day comp usage.

The old idea of leaving computers running was generally to prevent HDD failure but Seagate has come out and said that with the advancements in HDD manufacturing that's not an issue anymore. There's really no reason to leave a computer running 24/7 in my eyes.

The one reason for running your machines is folding.. I do and have been for a while, and there are many here who do as well.... You might want to start a thread in DC sub-forum and get the opinions of some of the people there.... But I have never seen any ill effects caused by running my machines 24/7.. and it's a good cause as well....

I leave my laptop on 24/7 and when I use to have a desktop, I left that on 24/7. No problems whatsoever. (Well.... I did have one IDE drive die, but that was after like 4-5 years)

When I'm at school I leave my laptop on 24/7, when I'm at home my desktop is on 24/7 - haven't had any problems yet. Just make sure everything stays cool.

I run three folding machines 24/7.
One of my boxes was an aging emachine, after about 6 months of 24/7 it had a meltdown and died. I think it was the PSU, but who knows. I rebuilt it,upgraded to a C2D 4300 and its back to folding, now doing SMP and racking up big points.

Yes, old stuff can finally die if run at 100% CPU power 24/7, but the cause is righteous.
