effects of hardware Virtualisation in CPU

i'm currently experimenting with VMware server

i was going to build a new computer shortly possibly based around i7/i5 but i beleive that i5 is not capable of hardware virtualisation

how much would this effect me over the i7 which i beleive is.

is there much benefit from hardware vt?
 
the ability to run ESXi or ESX down the road, if you would like to. Additionally, the ability to do paravirtualized kernel guests inside of Xen kernel distros
 
VirtualBox - VT gets you 64 on 64
VMWare Workstation - same
Xen - HVMs available, gives you unmodified boots, handy for P2V
Qemu - same as Xen
