Effect of CPU speef on RAID 5 array

For software RAID 5 since the parity calculations are done by the CPU, would having a faster processor improve write performance to the array? I want to build an NAS file server using a software RAID card. I can either use an old HP with a 733Mhz Celeron or I can buy a Mini-ITX board with 1Ghz processor or a Micro-ATX S754 with a Sempron processor. Would building the thing using a faster processor speed up writes to the array? Since I'll be using it as a storage deivce, blazing write performance isnt critical but I'd still like to get halfway decent performance out if it.

From all I hav heard about the Mini-itx platform with the C3 processor, it will certainly be slow as molasses in write. Considering that people are complaining about it being too slow for an FTP server (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1008086&highlight=ftp) I'd doubt that its powerful enough for a decent RAID-5 array. On top of it all, the integrated network is junk.

I'd take the Sempron out of those options
