I am trying to help a friend with his EeePC, it will not POST at all occasionally you will get a brief flash of the initial screen then it goes black. I have tried resetting and swapping the RAM from reading online that usually fixes the problem, but neither worked in this case. It is a 1005HA model.

Explain black screen more.......... do you mean the power cut out and you have to push a button to restart?
Or it restarts the computer again?
If it's cutting off power, then it might be a battery/charger issue.....
Sounds like you might just need to format and put a fresh copy of windows to me, though.....

Sorry, by black screen I mean that the screen is lit up but nothing is actually displayed. All the indicator lights seem to be working just will not boot from the hard drive. I also managed to get into the restore section and was able to boot from a USB into Linux.
Have you tried attaching an external monitor to see if the machine is ever fully POSTing and loading the OS? If so, are there any comments in the Windows Event logs?
Edit: Have you tried running MemTest or another bootable CD to run diagnostics? And also after pulling out some other components, such as hard drive?

It will now POST enough that I have it up and running on Fedora off of a USB, I haven't been able to run any diagnostics because it does not have a CD drive. I am trying to find a way to load them onto my USB stick and boot to it.
