EEE 1000: Suitable for IT work?

For work, I currently use a Lenovo R60e. It's a little bulkier than I would like, so I'm looking for something more portable, yet powerful enough to be functional.

I work in tech support and web development, so I'll need something for web browsing, emailing, perl scripting, SSH, FTP, etc. I currently have around 3GB of work-related files.

I'm trying to decide between the EEE 1000 (40GB solid state) and Dell M1330 (configured to $1,300). I mainly read about the EEE being used for light browsing and emailing, but does anyone have any experiences with it as an IT work system? Thoughts, comments?

well I'm going to find out soon enough lol. i got a 1000H which will be my main comp for awhile. i'm going to be training as an IT officer for Civil Air Patrol and it looks like my squadron needs one bbbbbaaaaaaaaaaaddddd. lets hope for my sake that the eee can handle what i throw at it (which I'm sure it will)

I think it will work fine, but in my opinion I would get something a bit more powerful.

If you can get your work to pay for it the new Dell E4200 or the lenovo one would be really nice, but I think the EEE will suffice.

You are going to hate the small resolution of the Eee's display for coding. I really recommend you go with a 13.3" 1280x800 laptop if you want something smaller than your current machine. The XPS m1330 would be a good choice.

I'd say get one of the new Latitudes, better battery life, SSD.

The EeePC is imho crap. I bought a 700 because it seemed like it would be useful, but between essentially unusable (and unfixable) wireless in Linux (check eeeuser.com for "pending" and you will see what I mean), and between XP being difficult to make work on that small of a screen, AND between the 1.4 hours or battery life, the EeePC sucks.

Yes, the 1000 may be a bit different, but I wouldn't bank on that. The new Dell E4200 is kick ass, if you can possibly get it I'd go with that (once it actually ships).

1.4 hours of battery life? is that running it at 900MHz? i've consistently got 2.5 to 3 hours out of mine. if i'm gonna run it over 630, i usually plug it in. but thats only for the light gaming i do. not to mention XP runs great on it. though the screen definitely does become annoying on it after awhile (had mine since last nov). thats why i bought the 1000H.
