Haven't used many cheap Intel cpu's since the 300A. chuckle. What could I buy for cheap (cheap=under $100) that might overclock a bit and might do it on a stock cooler., or close to it.

So, tell me what to look at and save me some time.

Thanks!

The only sub-$100 overclockable Intel processor is the dual-core Pentium G3258 on LGA 1150. It will also require a Z87 or Z97 board for guaranteed overclocking capability. Other chipsets may or may not have overclocking, it depends on the manufacturer whether they include it on that model or not, so some research will be required if getting a chipset other than Z87 or Z97.

Well, I'm familiar with the z87 and 97. They probably lie outside my price tarhhets. I just bought somev Asus H61 ms for $29 shipped, per at NE. I think I am going to need 1155 compatibility for the moment. I will see what I can do with 115 on the low end.

I just gave a quick ceck and some Asus H81 mb/s were cheap as the others and look like they got a shot at supporting some chips that might work for me. As luck would have it, I just bought a G3258 (or close to that) So, I'll get a chance to try it out in a few days. Geez, you might have set me on the right track in one shot.

Take the rest of the day off...

It has to specifically be the G3258 for modern Intel chips. If it's not, like the G3240, it's not overclockable. Other than that chip, the last overclockable Intel chips that were under $100 were on the LGA1156 socket (the 5-series chipset), and obviously those are outdated and can't be found new now. If you're looking for cheap overclocking fun, you're better off getting AMD.

The chip I just bought actually is a G3258. A complete fluke. O', gonna go study up on them and see what they cost.

thanks
