I've got a pentium-3 based computer I'm looking to upgrade, but they're so varied I don't know what my options are. It's a socket-based one, not a slot. Currently houses a 600MHz coppermine chip. 100MHz fsb.

Is it at all possible to put in, say, a 1GHz katmai chip?

I have a P3 600e that runs at 100fsb.
I just slapped 512mb of Crucial PC133 in there and I run it on a 133mhz fsb...

It can get pretty close to 900mhz but the ram doesn't like it too much. :)

I've got two 100MHz dimms in there now...I guess I'll try swapping for two 133 modules.

katmai p3's only came in 450, 500, 533, 550, and 600. the coppermine core is much better than the katmai. the fastest 100mhz fsb p3 is 1.1ghz (SL5QW), they are very rare but they do exist. if you have a socket based board then you can only accept coppermine based cpu's which limits you to the p3 and celeron line.

coppermines came in a few different stepping also...

cA2: started at 500mhz, went all the way to 800mhz.
cB0: started at 500mhz, went all the way to 1ghz.
cC0: started at 600mhz, went all the way to 1ghz.
cD0: started at 600mhz, went all the way to 1.13ghz.

cD0 was the end of the coppermine line. the cC0 and cD0 overclocked the best out of all the p3's. use the spec finder to find out which chip you want.

Lol believe it or not make a p3 1.4ghz put some bad boy ram in it cool it down and overclock it to say 1.8-2.0 ghz and it will put to shame a 2.5ghz-3.0ghz p4 hehe they are nice chips.

i had a celeron 1.3@1.6 that could hang with a p4@2.8 in some benchmarks. the major problem is the memory, sdram just cant hold a flame against ddr. there is a tualatin ddr board out tho but i dont know about its overclocking ability.

someone help me out here

slot is like what we don't use anymore

and

socket is what we do use like Socket A ?

Thanks, it seems to be a cB0 model. The bios seems to be limiting it though, PC133 ram runs at 100MHz and I can up the multiplier but it doesn't take.
Any idea where I can get an old asus bios?

you cannot change the multipliers on intel cpu's they are locked internally and cannot be broken.

Slot 1 = old school 440bx p2 and 100mhz p3

socket 370 = intel 815, 810, p3 official p3 chipsets.

socket A = amd athlon, doesnt pertain to us.

Okay, so basically what I CAN do is look for a socket 370 coppermine chip faster than mine that still uses the 100MHz FSB, right?

Thanks

The Coppermine ended with a 1.1GHz chip. The 1.4GHz chip is a Tualatin. While they are faster per clock, the idea of a 1.4GHz Tualatin beating out a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 is ludicrous at best. Unless you can break the 2.2GHz mark with it anyway. Even then the total system, using SDRAM or RDRAM on a single channel chipset with an ATA 66 drive controller, just isn't going to cut it.

The fastest 100MHz FSB Coppermine was 1.0GHz. However those are rare as most used a 133MHz FSB.

Alright, that clears up a lot. According to that website, though, here's what I've got:

SL3XV 650.00 MHz 100 MHz 0.18 micron cB0 256 KB 370 pin PPGA FC-PGA1

Considering that's the only chip on the entire list that's shown as being socket 370 PPGA FC-PGA1, what exactly am I looking for in an upgrade cpu?

what chipset do you have? if you have one that can support 133mhz p3's then your options arent as limited.

they did make coppermine 100mhz fsb 1.1ghz p3's and celeron's. i have a 100fsb celeron 1.1 in a system.

I know about the Celeron but I don't think they made a Pentium 3 1.1GHz. At least not a Coppermine.

SL5QK: 1.13ghz coppermine 133fsb cD0
SL5QW: 1.1ghz coppermine 100fsb cD0

they are both listed on the intel spec sheets. i was actually more suprised to see the 1.13ghz part listed, i wonder if thats the one they recalled.

Certain boards supported the Tualatin chips so I would check and see if your board supports them.
If it does look for a P3 1.4-S which was designed for servers and workstations and was a bit faster than the std. P3 because of more cache. It might of had more instructions also, but Im not sure. Its been a long time.
If it doesnt support the Tualatin chips your best upgrade would be a 1GHZ Coppermine P3 on a 133FSB. Intel had issues with this chip so beware. I forgot what it was all about, but it had something to do with running a Linux Kernel.
Make sure you have PC133 ram in your box.

Here is a link to a Tualatin 1.4-S 1.4S

Here is the link to the 1.0 133fsb coppermine. 1.0

there was no problems with the 1ghz p3, the problem was with the 1.13ghz p3. they recalled them then came back out with them later.

My bad....it was the 1.13 part. Its been a long time :D

As far as I can tell I've got the intel i810 chipset. If not...well, that's why I'm asking to be educated about the pentium 3 ;)

I've got no way to change the FSB so that is stuck at 100MHz.

Would this be compatible, yet run 25% slower on my machine due to the FSB?
SL4C8 1.00 GHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cC0 256 KB 370 pin PPGA

The 1.13 is the chip that was recalled. I knew about that one. I don't think there was a 100FSB 1.1GHz part. Not a PIII anyway. Not in the coppermine core. Tualatin yes.

Most likely your FSB is capped because of your 100FSB CPU. Most mobos @ that time supported 133fsb, but that could vary. What mobo are you runnin???

Asus MEW-AV

Looks like it's micro (mini?) atx...never can remember what that form factor is named.
Does the CPU also have a locked FSB that limits the entire motherboard??

I could not find any concrete info on the mobo model you listed, but I found some info on the MEW series in general.

From what I read so far your mobo only supports Celerons and 100MHZ FSB.
There is good news though. It seems that you can overclock it via jumpers. There should be a jumper free mode available in the bios though. My cousin is still runnin a Celery 600 @ 900. His pc is over 3 years old and that Celeron is still goin strong.
So its up to you.
Here is the link to a web book for the MEW series which could help you out.
MEW

Just download and run.

Heh, nice cpu....would work nice for me too...except for the price.

It is nice. I owned the 1.26-S and that thing overclocked very well. You can find the P3-S cheaper on Ebay or pricewatch. Make sure you have a mobo that supports it. Like the I815.

Actually my board looks closer to the MEW-AM because of the size and layout, yet I don't have those two on-board RAM chips nor do I have any jumpers for setting the FSB. No way at all to set the FSB. And it's a full P3 that's in there.

as acascianelli said, yes, there was a 1.1GHz Coppermine Celeron. Been there, done that. Sold a couple, replaced a few.

One of them was on PPGA and FCPGA board, it supported the old 500MHz and below Celeron's, up to the Coppermine, but not the Tualatin.

There was a 1.1GHz Coppermine Celeron. The Tualatin Celeron went down to 1Ghz for certain, I think as low as 900Mhz, and as high as 1.4Ghz.

Ok, reread, were you talking about a 1.1GHz 100MHz fsb PIII? yep, had those too. Coppermine was originally released at max of 1.13GHz, we all know about the recall. It was later officially rereleased right around the time of the Tualatin, and under the table, the 100Mhz 1.1GHz and 1Ghz CPU's were available as well. No one made a big deal about them, nor did Intel have a press release or really any kind of public comment, however I have sold them and replaced them.

Sigh......here. This link will give you all the speeds, multipliers, voltages, bus speeds you need.
Processor Specs
Its helped me before.

Ahem...that site says the apple G6 came out in 2003 at 4GHz, and the G7 was due in 2004?

I'll just buy that cpu and hope it works.

Final post....would a 1GHz Celeron (128KB L2) be an improvement over a 650MHz coppermine P3 (256KB L2)?

It depends on the app, but 99% of them would be faster with a 1GHz Celeron than a PIII 650.

yes, it will be faster. id like to see ANYthing that runs faster on a p3 650 over a 1ghz celeron.

Aside from the fact that I could give a CRAP about Apples...........they should try to have accurate info on their site. As far as I can see, the P3 info is right. ;)
