It seems that eBay might be retaliating against Google's decision to hold a protest party (concurrent with the start of eBay Live) by pulling all of its paid search ads off of Google’s AdWords network. eBay execs say that the company is simply experimenting with its advertising and marketing budget.

Durzy characterized the decision to pull the U.S. Google ads as an instance in a continued experiment eBay does to determine the best allocation of its advertising and marketing budget. But a source familiar with the situation said the move is an angry reaction by eBay's management to Google's decision to hold a protest party concurrent with the start of eBay Live, the company's annual conference for merchants.

I think what they were trying to say was "we are experimenting with not advertising with you...." :D

It is major bullshit that e-bay claims that the reason Google Checkout is banned is that 1 year isn't enough of a track record for it to be considered "safe"
GC is the same system used to pay for and payout google adsense, which e-bay has been using for years.

getting smarmy with your largest product consumer is not good business...

Who woulda thunk it.

google should just start its own auction site. Ebay is getting way too expensive + I'd love to see google start up its own site that only costs 1/2 or even 1/4 of what ebay's fees are...

The problem is getting people to shop there. Yahoo already has yahoo auctions (and I believe listings are free), but traffic is pretty light, as I recall.

That said, it's blatantly obvious that Ebay isn't allowing Google checkout because it competes with paypal.

If anyone could pull it off, Google could.

Yahoo! never gained enough traction in its auctions site, for a lot of reasons. And, at the time, Ebay wasn't so authoritarian. Between the way Ebay works now with restrictive rules (this includes PayPal policies), and fees that are now borderline excessive, the time is ripe for a good competitor. I think small-time sellers who are hurt the most would ditch Ebay in droves if Google had a compelling offering. I'd love to see Google try.
