I am upgrading from a 3060 to a 3070 that has two 8-pin power connectors. The power cable from my PSU has two connectors on the end. Can I use a single cable to power the 3070, or is it better/required to run a second power cable from my PSU? I've never had a GPU with dual power before.

What PSU? Generally it is best to run separate cables but it should be fine for a 3070 depending on the PSU.

I see various answers on this.. Apparently, if back in the day, where you PSU has multiple rails, you would want to use both cables.

I see it as, if the cable has the piggy tail, then obviously they built it to specifications that the gauge of the wire can handle 280-300 watts. ( caveat being a good quality PSU )

Stupid me, should have mentioned the PSU. It's an 850W ASUS ROG Strix model that's apparently built by Seasonic.

That's what made me pause. Why else would each of the cables have two connectors if only one can be used.

Exactly! I think alot of stuff you read out there on the wild wild internet is fud, to a certain extent.

But, not to dismiss any of it... the major caveat is whether a good quality PSU or poor quality..

Example.. here states the recommendation of x070 and above use 2 separate cables:
https://www.cgdirector.com/power-supply-guide/#What_are_Daisy_Chain_power_cables_or_pigtails

And here states (with source) that the plastic 8-pin connector can actually handle 288w
https://www.cgdirector.com/gpu-power-cable-guide/#:~:text=GPU%20Power%20Cable%20Guide%20—%20Total%20Power%20Provided,%20%20225W%20%205%20more%20rows%20

and here some more analysis by paralysis stuff for reading, regarding wire gauging

and on.. and on.. and on... and on..

Seems like going down the PSU rabbit hole is sort of like how to apply thermal paste

As others said, shouldn't be a problem. But... if you do happen to run into crashes, or the system powering itself off / rebooting, then just plug in the 2nd cable. That'll be a sure sign.

Thanks for all the good info. I got the card yesterday and will be installing it tonight. It's amazing how much heavier and larger it is than a 3060 Ti.
