Is your stock 8800 running a little to hot for your tastes? Well, here's a great solution to take advantage of the great cooling potential your 8800 already has. For me, I reduced my load temps by 15C, from 75C to 60C.
What you'll need:
- a small screwdriver
- a directional PCI fan like the VANTEC SP-FC70-BL 70mm PCI Slot Case Cooler ($16 + shipping)
- a free PCI slot adjacent to your PCIe slot
The only drawback is if your a silence freak, adding a PCI fan will probably make your system just a tad louder, but its not obnoxious.
It's simple:
1) Remove the plastic cover from your 8800. For most models/brands, this involves nothing more than unscrewing 4 screws from the 4 corners of plastic outer casing, and then gently removing the plastic cover. You may have to peel back some of the sticker on the front to expose the holes for the rear 2 screws. Removing this plastic outer casing will expose the massive heatsink on your 8800, making it a perfect client for a PCI fan.
2) Install your PCI fan so that it points at your 8800.
Ta-da! Your 8800 is now a heck of a lot cooler, and you didn't have to do any super crazy modding. Enjoy!
