Wonder what the Wii could have done without the stock shortages and I must say that I almost feel sorry for Sony because it looks like they couldn't even hit their revised 1 million figure for the US market.

Would love to know the PS2 numbers. Wouldn't be surprised if they did 2.5 million.

Not surprised by the numbers at all. I'm sure many parents went out looking for the Wii or PS3 for their kids, couldn't find one, and just bought a 360 instead.

well there were ps3s all over down here and still are just on the shelves. no this is not a flame but i think this is just a wake up for sony to lower the price.

I happened to notice a number of PS3s just sitting on shelves at EB games, Blockbuster, and best buy. It would seem to me that the demand was just not there.

Not a dig at you, but your post just reminded me of a Simpson's episode where Marge places a bet that "all the horses have fun" in a horse race. =)

how do we know they don't?

personally, i'll more than likely never buy a PS3, but i hope they are successful just so 3/4 of the internet shuts the hell up already about thier impending doom.

I haven't watched the Simpsons in years.

Anyway, to further elaborate, the 360 and Wii don't need any explanation on why they did well. The PS3, on the other hand, despite it's production shortages(and various other issues), has still managed to sell more units than the 360 did in the same span of time, and it's not even available in Europe yet(and I find it really hard to feel sorry for a company that probably still has the top-selling console).

So you see, all the horses do have fun in a horse race. The gamers' horses, that is, because no matter which one(s) you have, you'll probably get what you want.

Not sure how you got to that impression:

360 sold 1.5 million in 2005. It's looking like the PS3 has done 750k in the US and about 500k in Japan (1.25 million). So sure, the PS3 didn't launch in Europe but it's just as supply limited as the 360 was so it wouldn't have made a difference anyway.

I think the true test to see how far the demand for the PS3 stretches is how long it takes for the PS3 to become widely available. If the demand for the system is high, I bet it won't be until around March before you can easily obtain a PS3. If it's low, i suspect that they will be readily available in late January.

I'll have to second what others are saying about PS3's sitting on shelves. I see them all over now. I was in BB a couple of days before christmas and an employee came out with a dolly full of ps3's and announced to 100+ people in line, "Does anyone want a PS3?" Nobody wanted one.

id need to also agree. ive been to a couple stores looking for a wii an no luck, those same stores had plenty of PS3s sitting around. I even had an employee at one of the stores tell me almost every lie possible to convince me that he ps3 was worth getting and that it killed my 360 in every way...... i guess they are having a hard time getting rid of them.

At the very bottom of that post, it says that those are shipment figures.

We all know that the PS2 did not reach 100 million sold until around April of 2006. The PSP did not sell 15 million units in 2005, and it certainly didn't outsell the DS, especially when you consider that it wasn't available in Europe until September of that year.

The number of 360's sold at the end of 2005 was about 600K for N. America, and 300K and 100K for Europe and Japan, respectively, and not the proposed 1.5 million.

Well in my mind once people get it in their head that the PS3 is simply not sold out everywhere it will start moving. But I have a sneaking suspicion that Sony may need to release a PS3 w/o the Blu-Ray to compete properly. It would have been better to go the route MS did and release a Blu-Ray drive separately or even to Release a PS3 LX edition with Bl-Ray included, no games are really going to use it. Only few games come on Two Disc and then its so rare its not an issue as putting a game on CD would be where you would need like 10 CD's....

The best thing that we as gamers and consumers could hope for is an even race for the next couple of years. It will mean less exclusive titles, more competition, lower prices, and better innovation.

For what you say to be true, it would also have to mean that the 360 wasn't sold out during 2005 and that 0.5 million boxes were sat on store shelves...

I don't buy it... at all, other than in Japan.

I'm not sure I think lack of availability is such a great indicator of success. It's easy to find a 360, but it's clear that demand is still pretty high - it outsold all of its competitors (sans PS2!) for the past two months. Heck, the same is true of the PS2 - that's selling like crazy, yet it's easy to find.

Personally, though, I agree with you: $600 is just too much, and they'll start saturating the market at that price. However, if history is any indicator, we'll start seeing price drops across the board in the early summer. That should do a reasonable job of re-invigorating sales on all the consoles.

I also went to few stores this weekend and saw PS3's @CC and EB games but didn't see Wii's anywhere. 360's are still in good supply in spite of the heavy Christmas sales....even the original Xbox wasn't as available a year after launch.

Actually, it doesn't.

When a console manufacturer gives the number shipped, it usually includes everything in warehouses, everything in transit, and everything on the loading dock, so those 0.5 million were probably on ships, planes, and forklifts. Just becaquse they were shipped doesn't mean that they had made it to the retailers yet.

Microsoft has stated before that their "shipped/sold" figures are "en route to store from warehouse".

The 360 has recently started to outsell the PS3. Although comparing sales on a pure number basis of one thing that costs 3-4 times as much as something else isn't really fair now is it? On a pure monetary basis the 360 has been selling more than the PS2 since its launch.

I think that in the minds of the general public, their perception is the Wii won this round. This is my opinion because I have been talking to a number of non-hardcore gamers about the current gen-wars.

At Walmart last night they were sold out of EVERYTHING, except the PS3, they still had 4 units. I think its the price.

Who gives an S that some of you walked into a place and *gasp* has a PS3 laying about. I've seen this too, only to go back the next day and *shocker* no more!

And now that it's after the holidays, sales are going to be slower for everyone because of credit card bills.

You don't find it strange that even though 3x as many Wiis shipped over the holidays, they were still harder to find than PS3s were?

Proud to say I helped out that 360 #. :)

can somebody post those early sales numbers for those who can't get to the page because of their firewall at work?

360: 2 million.
Wii: 1.8 million.
PS3: 0.75 million.

(That's November and December up to 25th)

The growing number of excellent titles is really helping the 360 now. I work at Sam's Club in Addison, Texas and we are selling the 360s pretty fast now that alot more Great titles are out there. SOFTWARE sells the systems. Period.

Availability and christmas has also helped. Last year the 360's were very rare during the holiday season.

I don't see why there is so much speculation involved with the PS3's availability. Whether it be on the shelves or not.

The bottom line is BOTH of the PS3 models are just to expensive for most people to justify. Great titles will help, but not much.

Think about it, $500 and $600 is simply too much. That is before you pay tax and buy a game.

It doesn't matter that it offers a next gen player at a cost that is less than stand alone next gen players. That is irrelevant when you can't afford something. I like the fact that a Ferrari outperforms a Porsche, but that doesn't mean I'm going to run out and buy one, I couldn't afford it (yet).

Uh no I don't find it strange

They had a demand and were able to produce them very easily.
PS3 had a demand and they WEREN'T able to produce them very easily. You really didn't start seeing them in "laying around in stores" until a few days before christmas. I really see no difference between this and the xbox360 launch.

It's exactly what Bill Gates said: "The real battle starts next christmas"

I think Sony will just sell all their PS3's to Japan.

Seriously, one of my friends in Japan has a 12 GB memory chip card. What the hell, man. I have hard drives that are smaller than that lying around.

Did I mention that he uses it in his 5 megapixel CAMERA PHONE?! My dedicated camera only packs 3.2 megapixels.

So $600 for a Blu-Ray playing PS3 for the average Japanese person is going to be a steal:p

Then, once they're sold out in Japan, they'll lower the price for the poor people in the UK.

And then they'll lower the price for us poor Americans.

And then once again for the Canadians.

Don't get me wrong, the battle is far from over. Next Christmas will be great for gamers. All three platforms will be lining up must-have titles to try to lure us to their system.

But Sony overestimated their brand loyalty for the umpteenth time. They had everything going for them but still managed to blunder the launch in almost every imaginable way. While the battle is far from over, I just don't see them overcoming the massive hole they've put themselves into.

Not exactly. The PS3 is cheaper in Japan than it is anywhere else. Konami and Capcom, amongst others, threw a fit when they heard Sony's launch price. Sony shortly thereafter dropped the console's price, albeit only in Japan.

Well, what do you expect them to say?
I'll clue you in because obviously you don't know what he was referring to... the Sony shipped numbers are as soon as the console is manufactured. There's around a 3 week lead time from there to the stage MS state as shipped.

I believe MS numbers count as about 1 week from store shelves. Unless of course you think they're lying about the numbers they get audited on...

Edit, I was wrong about the lead time:

According to Bach, Microsoft's shipped numbers are "reasonably close to sold through. To make sure we're clear, Sony does shipped from factory. We don't. Our shipped means it has left a distribution warehouse in Memphis to a retailer. There is a big lag of six week to eight-week lag between what we called shipped and what Sony calls shipped. That's the way we do the accounting."
