E8600 over E8400... SO tempting...

I don't know if it would be smart, but that full extra multi is really tempting on the E8600 to replace my E8400... I dono if that extra 400Mhz would make a difference. My E8400 is running smooth at 4.0GHz now, who thinks 4.4GHz is easily doable with the E8600?

I guess it'd be nice to have just a little more headroom...less volts/heat etc.

i can see spending that much on the processor if it runs about 1ghz faster...

but 400mhz, you will see some improvement, but i doubt it will be that much.. especcially when you are already running 4 Ghz.

3.4Ghz vs. 3.8Ghz on my quad core only increases the superpi score by like.. .03

i would just hold out till next year (if possible.. geez.. i dunno how you live with yerself on just 4Ghz...) and get the new badass chips that will be 20-30% improvement (from reports thus far), rather than a 4% increase.

Unless you are FSB limited (RAM speed or something) I'd take the E8400 - you can probably still get to 4.0 with it, and I doubt the 8600 will go too much higher than that. Put the $100 into more RAM or video or something.

i wouldn't say you are a lock for 4.4. probably 4.2 for sure though. and yes, it will probably take less volts. personally, i don't think it is worth it but.... i will also say that anytime i've ever REALLY wanted a certain piece of hardware, i've never been disappointed buying it. if you WANT an e8600, go for it, but i don't think it is the better bang-for-buck investment.

I wouldn't say it's worth it at all. The cost for OC potential, in relation to actual palpable effect at that speed is very high..

There are better things to spend $100 on. Another 4GB of ram, easily.

If you want it and can afford it just get it. You might get hit by a bus tomorrow and splattered all over Broad St., and then your $100 would get spent by whomever you left it too.

I did the same thing with the q6600 to the q6700 on one of my systems. I got an extra .2Ghz which put me at 3.8Ghz, and not many people have the q6700. Also it made it faster then most 9450's and it was more fun. Hell just get it, hah!

4.140 on My e8400.
I don't think its a noticeable improvement.
For what I do, the only logical switch would be phase plus a qx9650 at around 4.4ghz.

I'm not going to go dual core again.

Its fast, and for what I do, 2 cores are pleanty, but the future is here. Quads come in handy.

Unless you really have some extra cash you have no idea what to do with, i wouldn't recommend it.

I'd say keep it for now then upgrade later to another option that's more viable and you will actually see more gains from.

Plus, your e8400 at 4.0Ghz should be no slouch either.. i think the performance gains >4.0Ghz has high diminishing returns.

I'd also say it's not really worth the improvement. For things that don't use more than one or two cores, you're not going to see much improvement - and for tasks that can make use of a quad-core, two extra cores would do a lot more than a possible 10% improvement in clockspeed.
