E8600 - Cool and quiet?

How hot does the E8600 run? I'm building a high performance rig but need to keep temps under control. I'm thinking that a Zalman HSF might improve things a bit.

Would I be better served with a lower clocked quad core? I'm using it only for gaming - and I know that games don't take full advantage of quad cores, but if they run considerably cooler with similar performance, I may be served well.

Additionally, I'm not going to be overclocking.
 
Where did you get the idea that quads run cooler? More cores = more heat, given similar core technologies.

The E8600 will be a cost effective choice given your requirements.
 
What about the E8500, or even the E8400. Sure they might have lower clocks, but it's really simple to overclock them without a massive heatsink. Plus they do not cost $275.
 
I just don't like overclocking. If anything, I'm the type of person who underclocks for better stability. That said, the prices of the E8400/8500 are quite tempting. I may end up going with one of them.

So heat wise, these processors aren't "troublemakers"?
 
I'm not sure what the difference is between the 8400 and 8600. My 8400 ran stock at ~42C idle, but I have it in a small case with a limited amount of airflow.

Some if not most e8600s are hot chips. Mine at stock idles at 37c and loads at 46c, but im running it under water (pa120.3,fuzion) and thats using the correct tj max of 100c. At my current oc of 4.1ghz it idles at 42c and loads at 52c with 1.23vcore at load. I think I got one of the hotter ones at idle but its great oc ability makes it a fair trade.

If you're getting instability at stock speeds, something is definitely wrong. Might be a bad chip, might be something else, btu you should NEVER have to underclock for "stability".
 
A lot of the E0 revision chips are hotter overall. Someone at XS pointed out that chips with lower VIDs seem to have hotter temps than those with higher VIDs (like 1.15 versus 1.25). My E8600 @ 4.0 idles at 39C under my Ultima-90 with TJmax set to 100C, 72C under load with Intel Burn Test, 56C load under ORTHOS

Stability results from the interplay of plural dynamics. Two of the most prominent dynamics are heat and stress placed on the chip. Heat itself is a function of many things; air being pushed over the chip, energy used by the chip, expulsion of hot air, and the induction of cooler air.

I use my PC in the living room. It's kept in a drawer with subpar ventilation. I don't like to use loud fans. All of these factors constrict the air being pushed over the chip, lower the amount of hot air expelled, and severely limit the quantity of cool air inducted. To balance things out and improve stability, one option is to undervolt / underclock.
 
I'm not sure about the E8600 but I got the E8500 and am running it at 3.4ghz. I get around 27-31c idle and I'm just using the stock intel cooler, however using prime it gets up to 53c load. If I clock much higher the temperature goes up fast. I need to get a better cooler to overclock better but currently my max stable overclock is 3.7Ghz. I can't seem to get any higher then that without raising my vcore and if I raise the vcore it shoots my temps up too much.
 
My E0 E8600 runs quite a bit hotter (5-7 degrees hotter) than my C0 E8400. But it's good for 4.4GHz with low volts. :)
