E8600 @ 180 dollars?

^^ That guy is asking for local buyers only. If I were you, I'd just get a used e8400 b/c you are paying a BIG premium for that 10x multiplier.

Does this seem legit? They are a somewhat reputable seller but I was led to believe that any ES sold is how do we say? Not Kosher?

sometimes it is if intel or AMD doesnt want the product.. you can always buy it then email intel and ask them.. but with it being as old as it is im sure intel doesnt give a crap.. and seeing the persons rating id take a guess they already have permission to sell it otherwise they would have to be complete idiots..

If it is an ES shouldn't it be unlocked?

It is 100% illegal to sell an ES CPU. It violates the NDA that must be signed by anyone who obtains an ES, which also specifically states that all ES CPUs are perpetually the property of Intel themselves. Anyway, in my opinion you'd have to be crazy to drop that kind of money on a dual-core CPU altogether.

No. ES CPUs are rarely if ever unlocked, unless they are samples of Extreme Edition CPUs.

When you can get an i7-920 D0 stepping these days brand new in a box from MicroCenter for $199, I wouldn't pay $180 for an illegal ES processor that is not guaranteed to be 100% functional and has zero warranty through Intel.

Well it's for a mITX build so thermals are an issue.

Then why not get something like an E8400 or E7500 for considerably cheaper?

+1

Also what will this build be doing? The Q9550 undervolt quite well at stock clocks and can stay quite cool with the stock HSF. And the above listed duals OC well, are retail and cheaper.
