e8500 vs q6600??

I will not be using this processor for anything major, nor will I be overclocking-so that doesn't need to be a consideration. Both are more powerful than what I need, but what the heck. Which processor would be better for normal day to day use, how much of a difference would I be able to see?

I've never owned a Q6600, but the people who have them, love them! I had an E6600 and It was a great CPU. I've managed to sell and upgrade to the E8500. It is much faster than my E6600 was. It is noticably faster than my E6750, E6850, and E8400. I do believe that if Overclocked the Conroes can keep up nicely with the stock E8500. Just my opinion as I just started modest overclocking last month.
 
For gaming and everyday use, the E8500 works perfectly since several older games do not run on multiple cores or ineffectively work on multicore. However, the Q6600 is great if you're running a workstation or plan on using the computer for heavily threaded tasks (video encoding, file compression,etc.).
 
I hope I haven't threadjacked here, but I'm in a similar boat.

My mobo died (939Dual-SATA2) & I need to replace/upgrade now. (I'm going to try replacing the bad caps & use it as a secondary pc if successful).


A Q6600's is only $20 more than an E8400 at Newegg.

I mainly game, do the ocassional vid/photo edit, ripping/burning, basic stuff.
I noticed a nice difference when I went to an Athlon64 3400+ to an Opty 180, but would I actually benefit going to a quad?

I have an 8800 gts 640MB vid card & X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS, so not too outdated there, so I just need a mobo, cpu & memory.

I'm on a tight budget, so I only upgrade when things break (i.e. I went from ti4400 se to current vid card after it fried), that's why I'm not sure which to go with.

Since the quad clocks slower and I don't plan on OCing, and if i do, not anything massive, which of the 2 would be a better choice for me since future games will start to take more advantage of mutiple cores?

Also, I'm up in the air about using DDR2 or DDR3.

Your help is greatly appreciated, if it weren't for the [H] I'd never have gotten my 1st rig built back in the hayday of the BE6II.

I hope that maybe things I've asked will also help the OP in his choice.
 
I'd have to recommend the E8500 and DDR2 memory at the moment. The E8500 is the same price as the Q6600 and fast DDR2 memory is Dirt cheap also. I reinstalled Doom 3 and have been playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and they run much faster and smoother on the E8500.

Im still not sure which way Ill go, but if you do want the q6600, it can be had for $180 at microcenter, and $150 w/ a mobo combo at frys for their labor day sale. i dotn know if either of these are online or just in store only.

from what ive seen, it looks like e8500 is better for most things, as 4 cores are not too useful for most everyday users yet. unless you do some heavy multitasking with multiple windows, it looks like the e8*00 series is the way to go.
 
if the OP truly desires not to OC, and we still have not reached the point where quad is the overall winner in MOST apps, I think the 8500 will provide a snappier solution to the quad.

This is one of those questions where (IMO) the answer is clear since speed is more beneficial to the OP for his uses.

If he had other reasons/needs, my answer would be different.

yeah, i do not plan on ocing anything:eek:. im relatively new to this and dont want to screw anything up. i think ill go with the e8500, as it seems a better choice to be used at stock settings than the q6600. thanks for the help
 
Was gonna say the go with the e8500 (why not the e8400 @.@? $20 bucks less, that's why I got it ...). Faster at stock speeds if you decide not to overclock and well, quad core use is very limited.
 
i'll go the other way if your looking to keep this for a long time go with the q6600 quads are very nice and you never know when you will want one the only reason i would buy a dual now is to see how high i could get an 8600 e0

Lacking power? I would like to see an E8500 beat the Q6600 in SupCom.

At lower resolutions, the dual core beats the quad, but both get frame rates far beyond the abilities of your display (IE, past 60FPS). At higher resolutions, they are basically the same. The Q6600 gives you two more cores, and is plenty fast anyway.
 
With most programs that only need a C2D, some progs like the highest clock speed, period. Thus, E84/8500 beats Q6600.

Some people like a cooler running, less power hungry CPU, that's the wolfdale, while it still has 3+ ghz and 1333FSB. :cool:

Personally, I'm waiting for a <$220, 2.8+ ghz quad to replace my wolfdale (actually, since my E8400 has a F'd temp sensor, my future cpu will most likely be a new <$190 E84/E8500).
