So, with:

965 DS3 Rev 3.3
Upgrade to E8400

Is there a need for DDR2 1066? I'm not sure what the max FSB is on this board (I'm not planning on upgrading for a bit), as my E4300 can't go too far past 300. Using DDR2 800, I'd be able to get 4-4-4-12 easy with something like this.

If I go with DDR2 1066, I could grab these. It seems like I'd be able to tighten the timings and lower the clock since they've been rated for 1066; or am I wrong? I'm most interested in running 1:1 with the processor, but correct me if I'm that doesn't provide the "best" performance. (Best being tentative, I suppose.) I also think I'd have some leeway with the DDR2 800 and, if need be, take it over 400 MHz, but...

I don't have plans to go past 4.0 GHz, or even over 3.6 GHz. I don't think I've got the hardware to do it, anyway, with what it taking 444 on the x9 multiplier. I don't think its needed, anyway. (Heh, but not necessarily wanted. :p)

Thoughts?

Personnally I was in the same situation than you one month ago.

I finally chose the G.Skill PI Series for two reasons :

Since I was running with 4 memory sticks, the lower voltage ( 1.85v ) was required not to stress the northbridge during overclock for more stability. I also plan to overclock my E8400 to 4050 MHz using 450x9 bus configuration.

The sticks overclock well until 475 MHz with minor voltage tweak. That means a 4275 MHz core clock for a E8400. Some succeeded to overclock the PI up to 500 MHz 5-5-5-15 2.0v.

Personnally, I wouldn't go for the Corsair modules. I prefer G.Skill, Mushkin, Patriot ( excellent, overclock higher than G.Skill but requires 2.35v, which is high ) or Kingston ( not very good in overclock though ).

High quality PC2-6400 RAM can overclock to 450 MHz today. Unfortunately, today's IC chips quality are worst than a few years ago and don't overclock as well as in the past. THe only module I know wich overclock over 600 Mhz is the Crucial Ballistix using Micron D9 ICs, but they aare also the les realiable module on the market.

Hope that helped !

I had to buy DDR2-1000 to get a good overclock as my DDR2-800 would not reach a high enough overclock.
Depends on your luck overclocking DDR2-800 so if you want a guarantee of reaching higher speeds, dont get 800 ram.

Ocz Platinum.
I got Ocz platinum DDR2-1000 to replace it.

Theres no point cheaping out on ram, the price difference is so small.

And what was your overclock ?

More than 450 MHz bus speed ?

If yes, I can understand, if not, then, your RAM is definitively not the best I've seen.....

Overclock is 456MHz (4.1GHz CPU with x9 multi).
The CPU works over 4.3GHz but I'm happy at 4.1GHz.

And the OCZ Platinum wasn't able to reach a 456 Mhz bus speed ?! Ish ....

If you have an e8400, you can OC it to 3.6ghz and it will be 1:1 with PC800 memory. With 1066 memory, you will be able to run at 1:1 at whatever bus you want.

No, the DDR2-800 could not reach DDR2-912 speed.
The DDR2-1000 had no problem (as would be expected) and clocked much higher.

I bought 1066 to go with my e8400 to give me plenty of head room. altough it seems that allot of 800 can run higher with looser timings.

Thanks for the suggestions. :D Due to the fact that my mobo's not "the greetest," I'm going with the DDR2 800 I linked in my OP (or if you're lazy, this one). The price even dropped a whopping $2! :p

Some people have also had success bringing this RAM above 400, and since the voltage is a cool 1.8-1.9 for the nice 4-4-4-12 timings (is that what you call CAS4?), I think i could bump it up to 2.0-2.1 and keep the same timings. I *think.* Testing to be done if I ever try.

There is definitely a benefit to faster than 1:1 for ram, although the difference is gonna be pretty small from DDR2-800 to DDR2-1066. And you might have trouble with stability on the dividers.

But if the price is similar go with 1066.
