I do gaming and I think my current AMD 4600+ X2 is a bottleneck with my 8800GTS sli's. I am looking at these two and are they the most popular Intel CPU's? Which one, please?

If you primarily game, game, most games now make use of a faster processor instead of the extra cores. If you want this, the e8400 is the way to go. The q6600 is better for multitasking.

..yup!! My 4 have all left home finally - 28, 25, 21 and 19, F'N woot!!
micsim, you need to give more info eg. what res/detail levels are you gaming @ or looking for, what games are you talking about?..I ask because upgrading your CPU may be moot if the GPU's are the problem...and that's on top of all the other info provided by the Guvernment;););)
