I'm just gonna order the CPU soon which is the last piece I need for my new build and I'm wondering how much of a difference will I see between the two...

I game very moderately, I use the PC more or less for photo and video editing and that kind of stuff

What am I better off with
 
I'm very happy with my E8400. It overclocks very nicely on air without any effort, and with some nice aftermarket cooling you can get this thing pretty stable over 4ghz. Games and photoshop run extremely smooth on here as well.
 
Considering that you can get the E8400 for the same price as the E6750, no point with going with the E6750 since the E8400 is about 5 to 10% faster at stock speeds, runs coolers, uses less energy and can OC very high.

Isn't the 780i the only board that supports the 8400 out of the box? If you are building a rig completely from scratch and not using a 780i, you would run into problems without an old 775 processor to flash the BIOS with
 
I am in the same situation. Just got in to work this morning ready to buy an 8400. I was debating quad or dual all night. I decided the dual was a better ocer, and thats my bag baby.
I look at newegg. OOS. Tiger direct is out too.
Anyone know a good place to buy one of these bad boys?
 
theres about 10-12 mobos that support the 8400 out of the box and I found a place that has them for $219

I just ordered a rig too. Seems it had a problem with alternate shipping address. Oh well, will call and straighten out later.
i got the e8400, 780i, w/ ballistix tracer8500.

Does mwave ( or any other online store) offer a discount if ordering a complete system from them? I'm just wondering; ill be putting in my order today. All and all ill be buying about 2k worth of equipment from them. Just wondeing if its really best to go through 1 supplier or to bounce around to get the best deal?

Through mwave, it'll match whatever you buy with whatever is compatible. For example, if you choose the e8400, it'll have a list of motherboards that you can buy with it. It'll also pair RAM for it. mwave's prices are typically less than those of newegg on a number of items. For example, I'm buying that proc, a gigabyte ds3r motherboard, and a 500 gig hard drive for about 464 or somethin'....On newegg the same items are...more. I forget the difference, but it was enough to choose mwave instead of newegg.
 
yea, I have built the pretty much same system w/ mwave, tigerdirect and newegg and have found that mwave has everything I need at the best price. I can get items off of Ebay cheeper but ... its ebay.. I think im guna go w/ mwave tho
 
The 6750 does overclock decently as well, but not like the 8400. I am happy with my 6750. Truthfully unless you are using stuff that is CPU speed dependent, encoding, rendering etc etc. Gaming really isn't bogged down by CPU speed. You would probably be okay with 6750, just depends what you want =]

That's because they just recently changed their price (from $189.99 to $199.99). It says it's no longer available, but if you visit a local MicroCenter, they still have a ton of them. Earlier today (Tuesday), I obtained another one just because of that price ($189.99). Although the salesman told me "It's now $199.99 but you still save roughly $30.00 off other retailers" when I took mine to the cashier, it still rang up as $189.99 and I said to myself, "Cool!!!" But really, I think the price is going up and I think Tuesday could very well be the last day that anyone could still get it for that price. The new price should take affect very soon (if not already). I think I was lucky to still get it at that price. Wednesday could be a different story. Good thing I live very close to a MC. Mine is a packdate of 1/29/08 Q748A223 (if you care to know).
 
E8400 ftw.
Uses less power so less strain on the PSU, clocks higher, has more cache and produces less heat.
The CPU may get as hot as older chips but the core is smaller so there is less heat to dissipate.
Mine is running at 4GHz as there is no benefit yet to running faster for the games I play.
It does 4.35GHz @ 1.5V but I darent use that voltage til I know its safe.
What a great chip, it can easily max my 8800GT at 750/1890/930 !
 
My nearest Microcenter is near Bryn Mawr, my guess is about an hour away. Check out their phone number: (610) 989-8400 Hehe, I'm going to call and see if they have the e8400 in stock tommorow. Looks like I'm driving all the way up there if they have it. (From South Jersey)
 
My 8400 just came via FEDEX the Asus PK5-E Should be here tomorrow.... hopefully all goes well with bios
