E8400 Temp. Issues

I recently put together a rig with an e8400 wolfdale 3.0ghz. I used the Zalman CNPS9500 heatsink with the included thermal paste and applied the paste using the 'line-down-the-center' method. I currently have the processor speedstepped and overclocked to 3.6 with a voltage of 1.328. I'm using the newest Everest beta to check my temps and it reads (at idle) Core 1 temps of around 48 with CPU temps at 36 (taken at ambient temperature of about 80-85 degrees F). So my first question is, is this an OK temp for my setup? I'm considering reapplying the thermal paste using Arctic MX-2 but would it be worth it? And my second question; What is the difference between the Core 1 temp reading and the CPU temp reading and why are they so different? Which one is a better indicator of how hot my processor is running?
 
That voltage seems a little high for 3.6, try using realtemp and report back.

1) Use realtemp and report back
2) Have a look at my c2d/c2q overclocking guide. If nothing else, read the section on minimizing your vcores (not just CPU, but NB, VTT, etc.) which may allow you to run @ 3.6 GHz with less cpu vcore. The major driver for heat production is your vcore.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. So I went into the BIOS and set the core voltage to 1.3. Real Temp reports core temps of 36 and 34, respectively. Under load Real Temp reports core temps of about 44 and 38 One thing I'm wondering about though is why is it that even though I set my core temp at 1.3 in BIOS, CPUz never reports a core voltage of more than 1.26 under load? I suppose this couldn't be a bad thing either way but I find it odd and it makes me wonder if I set my voltage correctly.
 
My E8400 wont register temps lower than 48C with Realtemp yet the motherboard and its util report temps well below that range and show increases in temp with minor loads that Realtemp does not reflect.
Also you cant trust idle temp readings, the temp sensors are not calibrated for idle temps, they are only calibrated to give the correct temp at TjMax, the throttling temp.
 
Wow, that's a high voltage for 3.6. My e8400 runs at 3.6 with 1.184.

How do you find out what your voltage should be for your processor ? I have a Q9450 Speedstepped/OC @ 3.2 and my Voltage is 1.30. Is this normal for me?
 
@audi - what does it say on the box your processor came in (what is the max voltage)? My X3360 is 1.25 V and I'm took lazy to look up your max voltage, but I'm thinking you shouldn't be exceeding 1.25 V with a Q9450.

...is that 1.30 V what the auto setting is selecting? If so, read my overclocking guide paying attention to the minimizing vcore section to figure out what the min. amount is for stability.

following your guide, I set both the fsb voltage and cpu voltage to 1.25. Saw about a 4-5 degree decrease. Tho cpuz is reading my core voltage at 1.20. This is in the range of my cpu therefore can I assume it's safe ? What is the con of going lower and sneaking out a few more degrees.

I just started my oc on my new Q9450 and havent had much time to put into it but so far I have found 3.52ghz @ 1.28v to be stable for at least 2 hours in prime95. I have bumped my NB to 1.55v but otherwise have left all other volts on auto.
 
Theres no con if it works without error.
Careful going too low as you may not be able to boot. This will likely require a CMOS reset but wont harm anything.
