E8400 (stock) temperature issues

OK, I might be worried for no reason but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I had some issues seating the HSF properly on this and after I felt like I was going to end up snapping my motherboard if I pushed much harder (or seated and reseated it until each black pin was pushing through to a maximum and equal extent) I decided to let it be and figured it was seated well if all four legs were flush with the mobo and I could lift the mobo up by the HSF. It should be noted that I left the stock thermal paste on.

So I get Vista installed and check my temps and one core is idling at between 30-35 and the other at around 35-40. This is using RealTemp. I have another computer and am waiting on getting two more system fans for the new build so I held off on doing anything intensive, but the 2nd core did get to 50C while just doing web browsing, installing programs, watching videos, etc.

My question is, are those idle temps high? Is 50C ridiculously high for the little amount of stress I was putting it under? Right now I'm on an Athlon64 3000+ and the CPU temp from my PC alert (presumably not a core reading) is 40C and if that's the CPU sensor then the core is probably hotter. I am not going to be using this comp for another two or three weeks, so I could easily order some new Arctic Silver, reseat the HSF and see if anything changes, but maybe these temps are normal with the stock fan? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
 
mines the exact same, well like ones 35c average other is 28c, but im oc'ed to 4.0 so i dunno..
 
Haha, I'd say that OC'ing to 4.0 and having your temps still be cooler than mine is a sign that something is up with my setup.
 
The max core temp is somwhere around 95c (Realtemp assumption) to 105c (Coretemp assumption etc.). You are a long way off max.

Tell us your Vcore (BIOS and motherboard setting), ambient, CPU case and core(s) temp under load and when idle.

The only published max temp from Intel for this chip is the CPU case temp which is 72c.
 
I'd say for the stock Intel cooler, that's probably about normal. A better HSF setup will cool it off a little, AND probably be easier to mount.

As Technophobe said, more info about your vcore and ambient temps would be easier to answer your question.

Good choice on Realtemp IMHO....
 
At a Vcore of 1.36 (CPU-Z reading) and overclocked to 4 Ghz, I idle around 35 and hit 60 at load with Orthos. If I am surfing around or doing general "office" tasks, it stays in the mid 30s.

I think 50 degrees is a bit high for not doing anything intensive. I agree with the comments the other guys have made and if you intend on overclocking even a little, I'd advise getting some Arctic Silver 5 and a new HSF like one of the Xigmatek units, along with a bolt-thru kit.
