Hi,

I'm trying to overclock my E8400 and having some success but not nearly the numbers I hoped (wished) for. I've been able to get it stable at 3.825ghz running OCCT for 12 hours. The vcore is 1.40v and the memory is 2.0v. Unfortunately I'm not able to get any higher stable. I'm able to post up to 4.3ghz but cannot get into windows above 4.0ghz. At 4.0 I'm not able to do OCCT without BSOD regardless of how high I up the voltage.

My setup:
E8400 lapped
EVGA 790i Ultra
4gb G-skill DDR 3 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231167
2 XFX 8800 GTX
Auzentech Prelude
2 Samsung 750gb HD
Vista 64 Ultimate

I ran memtest+ and it did find memory errors so I'm in the process of RMAing the chips. I expect that the ram is at least one part of my problem but could it be anything else? Any suggestions what else I should test? In addition to RMAing the memory, I also ordered some OCZ DDR3 1800 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10006423&prodlist=celebros

Any suggestions/tips will be greatly appreciated

Yeah, that's one of the disappointing things about this chip. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go that high to get 4.0ghz+ to say nothing about 3.825. Maybe the ram was causing the instability and the cpu can actually run stable with less voltage. Doesn't make sense to me, but I'm a noob at this stuff.

What you can do to determine the max speed of your proc is to set your ram to the lowest strap/divider that is available as to rule out it not being able to run at the speed you are setting it to. And then proceed to oc the chip 100mhz at a time until you cannot get a stable oc with 1.4 max voltage. Then you can back it down 1 step and if it turns up stable then lower the voltage until it fails to pass at least 8 hours of prime95. And then just do the same for your memory, put your proc on the lowest multiplier and repeat raising fsb until it fails a pass of memtest, either adjust voltage or lower the speed. Hope this helps :D

That's very helpful! I'll definitely try this when I get my new ram. Thanks a lot

I had an e8400 that topped out at 3.8ish. I could post at over 4.0ghz, but it wasnt stable. Same scenerio as you. then I bought another chip, and it was stable up to 4.0ghz, and I could post at 4.6, but it wasnt stable.

Each chip has its limits. Nothing you can really do about it. Not every chip will overclock the same. this is the one thing people need to remember when overclocking. Now adays we overclockers are spoiled bunch :D

Make sure your increasing your FSB and SPP voltages though. Those help out w/ CPU overclocking. Also read up on GTLvref settings, as they can help an overclock out as well.
