E8400 or Q9550

So I'm in the market for a new processor, I had a Q6600 which was great and unfortunately no longer works.

So being on a tight budget (not expecting to buy a new CPU) I don't have much to spend on a new processor and was considering going with an E8400 Dual Core processor or a Q9550. The problem is that after taxes the Q9550 is almost $300 in difference. Is it really worth it to go with the Q9550 it goes over my budget which is a problem but I also want the new processor to last for awhile.

I probably won't be overclocking either one and will be using stock speeds and the majority of use will be gaming with minor video editing projects. I might down the road build a video editing computer in a few years if my work load increases.

So I'd like to hear opinions on either processor if I can and I thank everyone in advance who replies and offers their advice, it's greatly appreciated.
 
i dont know if you work or you go to school, but if you don't work..ask mom or dad to lent you some money and definately go with the Q9550.. try to get an E0 stepping and you might get between 3.8 and 4.3 Ghz
 
Tough call, Depending on the app and how high you had the 6600 the e8400 will actually outperform it in certain tasks which don't leverage all cores. 8400's are hitting 4Ghz+ rather easily too. Its kind whack though to downgrade from a quad to a dual but then again if you crank into the 4.2-4.4Ghz neighborhood that's no slouch.

As aforementioned merely getting another 6600 is close in price to a e8400

EDIT: you said no OCing sorry. You know the other thing to consider if you're looking super cheap is the E72/7300's. Less than $120 and they go ok. They're certainly a step down from your old 6600 but if money is tight. If you decided to OC them they get into the mid 3's rather well. I got one to 3.6Ghz on 1.325v
 
If you are going to be doing more gaming than actual processes that work better with a quad then I would go with the E8400, dual core processors as of right now are still better for gaming. Not many games have utilized more than 2 cores yet. Far Cry 2 said a quad core would see a 30% performance increase but that has been proven faulty. Even though you said you won't be overclocking, the E8400 is a great overclocker, I have pushed mine to 4.2 and it was prime stable or course it was also on water, but I have seen systems on air push 4.0+
 
Maybe look at picking up a used Q6600? I haven't checked recently, but prices were pretty good when I checked a while back.

To answer the first question, I do work and it's hard to ask my parents for the money for the simple reason they've moved on.

Another Q6600 could work and might be something I'd look into, didn't really think to look for another Q6600 to be honest sort of assumed it was just discontinued. Regardless of which processor I go with it's going need to hold on for a couple of years (which I know is hard with the way technology moves)

I am probably going to be gaming more but the pc will still have to do some work when I bring my video work home with me.
