I'm going to be making the switch from AMD to Intel shortly and will be purchasing either 8400 or q6600. I will be overclocking so I need a good cooler for which processor I purchase.

Say if I purchase the e-7200 on the cheap is there anything that can get it up to 3ghz and beyond?

Tuniq Tower, Noctua NH-U12P, Noctua NH-C12P, Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with two Noctua NF-P12 in push pull, Zalman 9700NT, CoolIT Freezone (not for quad).

Some other cheaper alternatives exist such as the Zerotherm Nirvana coolers, etc but I am not too familiar with them.

Out of the coolers selected common gripes are: Zalman is overpriced for ok performance, and Freezone is unreliable.
I would personally say go with either the Noctua or the Thermalright (same basic tower configuration) as they are quiet and the best performers and then the Tuniq Tower (bit cheaper than the rest)

i still use my cooler master hyper 6+, works great and can be found around 35.00.

What about Arctic Silver Compound? When I used to build and upgrade computers regularly it was so much emphasis put on using Arctic Silver.

Are they still considered the best or just any compound will work?

i still use it.

I use the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 on my quad, awesome cooler. My e8400 simply doesn't run as hot, so I use the AC Freezer 7 Pro.

QFT.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'm checking the Egg for prices and such.

Ok we have 1 user with Arcic Silver, anymore?

I want to know if Arcic Silver still brings down temps on the cpu or does today's cooler do a decent job?

I use Arctic Silver 5, reading the reviews help brings it a couple C down. With my setup, a E8400 in my Thermaltake lanbox SFF I'll need all the cooling I can get. 43C at Idle and max 57C at load with Prime95. I also live in florida so its pretty hot ambient temps here.

I used the Tuniq Tower and it works great. It's huge though, so make sure you have enough room before you buy it.

I was looking at the specs and it seems the Zalman and Zerotherm fans go up to 2800 and 2600 rpm. The others are around 2000.

I mean does that matter on a good overclock?

TRUE120, Xigmatek 1283, OCZ Vendetta 2

replace the fan with a more quiet scythe F or slipstream

for TIM: MX2, AS5, or the favorite right now: OCZ Freeze

Thanks for all yr suggestions, I went with the Xigmatek 1283 and Artic Silver 5. This is starting my upgrade to Intel for the 1st time in about 10 years.

I'm trying not to open another thread but I got the cooler down & everything else I will upgrade except the processer. I read in another thread someone mentioned that they got greater performance going from a q6600 to a e-8400 overclocked to 4ghz.

Once again I'm back with Intel again because I think AMD is confused right now. I do a lot of video encoding and some gaming. Can anyone tell me from experience with the latest Intel duals and quads which one is going to give great performance?

q6600. best BANG for the BUCK. quad. Thats where things are headed right now. just gotta wait for more multithreaded apps.

Enjoi your purchase, you won't be disappointed. As for the processor, E8400 is the best bet for Intel dual core (usually overclocks to 4GHz+) from their 45nm Penryn lineup. Q6600 is the best bet for quad core. (both of these selections are assuming you want to spend around $200 for your processor).

As for quad vs dual core, if you are going to keep your computer for 1-1.5 years, go with the E8400 as games right now are fine on dual core and the extra L2 cache and clock speed will help along with the higher clock speed. Then in your next build, go quad if current concurrency issues such as locks and queues are figured out allowing for more quad+ enabled games.
If you are going to keep your computer for longer than 1.5 years or you are a heavy multitasker (ie: video editing while using matlab while watching a video) or video encoder or you use a lot of professional applications (scientific, creative, etc) then go with the quad core.

I agree the Q6600 is a lot of bang for your buck, yes. Especially overclocked that is. And if your software do support multithreading, then even better. I used the Q6600 in my old rig and went and bought another one now when I built my new one.

Great. I'll go for the Q6600 because I think it's nice for my situation right now. I see the q9300 Yorkfield is out there but at $285.00 that's out of my price range.

Being on a 45nm process I'm sure they can overclock heavy.

I am using a Zalman 9500A LED on my newly upgraded E8500 and am loving the results! I played Crysis (most demanding game I own atm) for over an hour, exited checked the CPU temp and it was on 47 degree's celsius... not too bad! Room for some overclocking there!

I love the blue LED glow coming from the Fan too lights up my room (case has clear side) with a nice blue glow :)

In regards to overclocking.. well the Duel Cores create less heat than their Quad Counterparts so I am guessing the Duel Cores will overclock higher?

My mate pushed his E8500 up to 4.16 gighz using my cooler, that is 1 Gighz overclock and it runs stable!

I was looking at one of the Zalman coolers, they have some nice products.

Like I heard from someone else pushing the 4ghz barrier you see results.

I have AMD quad core now and just tired of it and it's getting old.

I want to see what a Q6600 can do when encoding two movies at the same time.

Hey thanks for the recommendation on this cooler. Bought from the Egg and it arrived the next day. Decided to try it out on my X2 4200+ and reached a max of 2750 mhz from stock 2200 before my system crashed.

Nice cooler and I know it would work much better when I upgrade to the Q6600.
