HEy guys,

Following is my RIG:
E8400 C0 stepping
Abit IX38 QuadGT (BIOS 13)
Corsair XMS2 5-5-5-12 @ 1.9 (rating) 2gb DDR2 800mhz Kit
BZ 800 PSU

...now coming to the problem

.... Yes the problem is i cant OverClock my E8400 anything more than 3.6ghz @ Mobo's Auto settings.

With Auto settings my PC boots @ 3.6ghz but its unstable... if i run OCCT / Everest CPU Stability Test..it Fails with Error Code 1/4.

When i try to play Crisis the game crashes after sometime.

If i set the following manual then still i get error on OCCT with CPU Running Too Hot!!
Vcore = 1.4 / 1.36 / 1.35 / 1.3
DRAM Ration = 1:1
Ram Voltage 2.0 / 2.2 (but with this the Comp wont boot up or rather give cold boot)

.... if i keep my Vcore @ 1.4 or any manual 1.3 or 1.35 or so stil system wont boot. That setting works fine for 3.5ghz but @ that time Idle temps are too hot (idle 44-49* with CCF cooler)

....dunno whts wrong but what i think is its the RAMs as its rated @ 5-5-5-12 @ 1.9v only??

.... please help me and tell me where am going wrong!

...........Thanks in advance.

3.6GHz = 400x9? If you're running more than 400FSB, you're running your RAM over the 800MHz it's rated for. Drop the RAM divider from 1:1 to something lower, that way you aren't overclocking your RAM at the same time. Leave the RAM at the rated 1.9V for now. Later you can try raising the voltage or playing with timings to get it to run at faster than 400MHz.

You shouldn't have voltages set to Auto, set your RAM and CPU voltages manually. You might need a northbridge voltage bump if you want more than 400FSB from your motherboard.

Also, remember to lock the PCI-E bus to 100MHz instead of Auto.

CCF is a good cooler, what are you using to measure CPU temps?

hi, thanks for the reply...yes its 400x9

Am not able to select any other DRAM ration than 1:1 @ 400x9 as @ 1:1:20 i get 800/802 and others are all more than 800..next 1:2 is something 960mhz.

Do you mean that i need to set RAM V to 1.9v manually and then set 400x9 ? 2ndly what Vcore do i select for the proc??

My PCI-E Bus is already on 100Mhz and not auto.

@ 3.0 (stock) and @ 3.6 (OC'd) i get 36* out of the case / On the bench and in the case i get 39*-41*-42* and @ Loads it doesnt go over 51%

Have you tried bumping the memory up to 2.0 or 2.1? Those voltages won't hurt the RAM at all and might give you some more stability (even though 1.9 is in "spec"). You shouldn't need anything more than 1.4V to get 3.6 out of the processor, many of them will do that speed at something near stock volts. Have you tried bumping the NB voltages - 400FSB might need a bump there as well.

@ 1.4v if i get 3.6ghz then for 4.2ghz how much should i do? And btw.. 1.4 increases the temps of my proc drasctically even though if i have a cooler.

2ndly if i bump the RAM core to 2.0/2.1 then it gives cold boot

I havent played around with NB... am not OC Expert to play with that :p so can you please tell me how and what exactly i need to do with NB ?

PS: Will try 1.4v for 3.6ghz and post the results here in sometime.

Hi b00gieMan
I got your pm, my mobo is the Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4

Onto your problem:
Can you explain what you mean on this line
If i set the following manual then still i get error on OCCT with CPU Running Too Hot!!

What load temp does your CPU reach and what temp does the "too hot" message occur?
Use Coretemp or Realtemp to get the temperature.
(If you have adjusted TjMax, let me know what you have set it to. If you dont understand what that means, ignore it :))

The too hot message in OCCT can be adjusted in OCCT - set a higher limit to avoid that.

I'd try to bump your northbridge voltage a touch, might be called MCH in your BIOS.

Now am @ 3.84 @ 1.3v

RAM = OCZ HPC Reaper @ 856mhz or so @ 1:1 @ 2.15

Ran Orthos 15 mins tests..and gives stable 15 mins test with the above settings...

PS: HAVENT PLAYED WITH NB/MCH SETTINGS AS YET MANUALLY ALL IS MANUALLY SET BUT ITS SET TO DEFAULT (not auto). RAM TIMINGS ALSO SET TO AUTO.

....so i guess am facing this iissue due to RAM ? Corsair XMS 2 @ 5-5-5-18 @ 1.9v max.
