E8400 OC and Temps

Hi all. I finally built my First ever intel system, And went with the DFI DK X48 MOBO and a intel E8400.

I just built it yesterday, and having some wierd numbers come up, and a couple of questions if some of you could possibly help that know more about these.

I also chose the Xigmatek SD964 and use MX-2 TIM. ((BTw those push pins are a joke :( Dont seem to give much confidence the HS is seated properly :-/ But I think I finally got it :p )

I know some of these ?'s may seem noobish, but this is my first intel so its all a bit different to me.

I re-used my old RAM, which is Corsair XMS2, ddr25400 (667) and I have 4 sticks @ 1GB each. This may hinder my OC some but so far heres what I have.

1:1 Ratio (set 333/667 DRAM in bios) and set the FSB to 390.
So Im sitting @ 3511MHZ, and RAM is @ 780mhz (5-5-5-15) Not to bad I guess for 667 RAM :)

Probs I have .. I couldnt find an actually CPU voltage in bios but did find the special add option. I chose the 4th down i think, +85 to get the system to boot at this OC.
Now under Orthos load CPUZ,DFI Guardian etc show 1.24V. However at idle I only show 1.12.

All tend to agrre the RAM is at 2.0 Volts tho, and FYI the 4 667 Corsair sticks I have are rated at 4-4-4-12 @ 667 1.8 V ... I run them at 2volts cuz of the OC and the fact theres 4 of em :-/

After 30 min Orthos load (yes I know it needs to go longer) I had no errors, but my temps are all different.

Core Temp Shows: 58-62 (avgs around 60)
DFI Guardian shows 56-60 (avgs 58)
Real Temp shows 53-55.

All show around 40 @idle except real temp which never goes below 44 :-/

I did manage to get the system up at a 400 FSB but had to bump the voltage anothe notch or 2 (on special add) which added some more heat ... like 3-4C i think it was so i dropped back down for the time.

OK, so im curious.. Which temps do I believe?
2nd ... 58-62C @ after 20 min or under full load ... is this normal for a E8400??
What is the Typical Voltage For a E8400 running at 3.6 or 400 FSB..
(guessing the will all be differnt just kinda curious)

1 more thing, I read to disable the side step option that allows the CPU to throttle down @ idle while OCing, but i cant seem to find this option in the DFI bios :( Would it be called something else?
I have a ton more questions , mostly about DFI bios so if anyone has a good link to something that explains em would be greatly appreciated.
 
Go for 3.6Ghz or 9x400. 58-62C for load is fine. Granted after a few hours you'll probably go up another 2-3C, but thats acceptable. I'm surprised you needed to raise the CPU voltage at all to acheive 3.6GHz.

You don't need to disable speed step at the speed you're at, unless you're having problems just leave it on. You sacrifice a LITTLE bit of performance but you also save a lot of energy and run cooler when you're not under heavy load.
 
After looking around a bit it seems that the default CPU voltage is 1.06 .... or at least what my bios and Core temp is saying. Maybe thats why i had to raise it .. i dunno :-/
 
If you are questioning what temp program to trust. I suggest you read this single post. It pretty much sums up the entire debate. I trust RealTemp, and I am guessing the reason why yours never goes below 44* is the you have sensors that are stuck. Go through the whole calibration method on RealTemp and you won't look at another temp program again. My temp on my e8400 ramps up real fast, and then levels off. So getting up to ~50* in 20 mins is no big deal.

I had to go up to 1.3v to get my e8400 to run stable. Running Orthos right now and it right at 12 hours. Not sure if I will go the the 24 hour e-peen, we'll have to see. To me 1.3v for my 3.6ghz OC seems high, but it's what I needed to get it up there. I would OC it more, but don't want to raise the voltage much more.

But it seems my OCing has come to an end for the time being untill i get better RAm :(. I got a blue screen earlier. I ran memtest, and at test 5 it encountered an error :(. So, Im guessing the RAM is holding me back. Was hoping for 3.6 too :(
Had to drop down to 3.4 OC, with RAM @ 750 and testing stability now again ...

That was one of my concerns about voltage as well. It seems mine is going to want around the same, 1.3 or little less for 3.6. SAdly, My RAM isnt allowing it to happen so I dont know for sure yet.

Its unfortunate that the slowest I can the RAM on this board is 667 speed, which is what i have :(
 
One more ?

I had to lower my OC a bit due to RAM. In doing so i was able to lower the cpu voltage a couple notches. (the special add) A little bit ago, I went into bios and disabled EIST and C1E.

I read this was a good idea at first to get a stable OC then turn on later.
So, now my cpu doesnt throttle down at idle and stays at its set s speed, which atm is a FSB of 380, 3415 mhz.

So heres my question, before i disabled it, I was reaching 60C in Prime load and showing Voltage at about 1.23 or so while loaded....

After I disable i got a blue screen. So I had to bump the CPU voltage back up a notch( where it was before) and now im showing a Voltage of 1.15 and load temps of 51C.

WTF??? Why would it go down in temps and Vcore when i disable them? It showed higher vcore and load temps enabled?
