Guys,

I have an E8400 coming to boost my PPD. Anyone have any information on whether the improvements Intel made from the last generation provide boosts for FAH?



 
You should see about a 10% gain in PPD for clock for clock.. Now ifyour into Overclocking that Processor can in many cases easily reach 4Ghz and some push 5Ghz. Get a good thermalright Ultimate Extreme (TRUE) and some good thermal past and 2 yate loons 79cfm fans and its hard to get it hot. I have my Q6600 which produces more heat then the E8400 OC'd to 3.6Ghz and at 1.385v and even when my boxen room hit 82F it kept the processor at 59c which is pretty damn icy...

My guess would be this:

3.4Ghz 2500PPD
4Ghz 3000PPD
5Ghz 3750PPD

Just a guess though.

 
I have been folding with an E8400 for a while now.
Most E8400 are Prime95 stable to about 4.1 Ghz or so
Recommend you keep the voltage below 1.35v for anything
24/7 like folding. Been reports of Wolfdales degrading over time
on higher than 1.35v. At 3.7 Ghz, mem at 1100Mhz, ppd=3000
3.85Ghz is approx 3100ppd. 4.0Ghz about 3200ppd. My E8400
usually errrors out after a day or 2 at 4.0ghz and I really don't
feel comfortable raising the voltage any more. So it runs 3.85
24x7. (PPD numbers using notfred diskless folding client).
Great folding proceesor but hard to find, you might be better
going with a quad core for the money though. Last time I checked
they were about the same price.
 
Nice Air Cooled that is some respectable production considering my E6600 at 3.375 = 2200. So that is a 1k gain with a bit of an increase in clocks and the rewritten instruction set.

Any clue what wattage that is drawing?

 
I bet the E8400 would do best in a main PC that also folds. One SMP instance so you don't have the conflict crash and wicked fast for games and the like.

 
I think most folks haven't had an "opportunity" to get vista SP1 yet. It's too bad that SP1 makes things worse....
 
Vista SP1 makes all the good that program does go away... At least, that's what I've heard.

Care to elaborate on this any? I've got Vista Ultimate 64 on my main box running two SMP's, and if its going to thrash the affinity I don't want to mess with it.

 
Thanks for the linkage there, HighYield. I think I'm just going to wait on the SP1 for Vista. All my other boxen are straight up XP, but I've been thinking about moving a couple of my Q6600's to Linux, since people are talking about an increased PPD using it.


 
Thanks for all the info guys. I got the 8400 for 215 shipped. I wanted a 45nm and the primary duty will be as an HTPC so this fit the bill. Good to know that I will be doubling my PPD.
 
I have been running windows xp vmware w/ 64bit linux smp this weekend on the E8400
ppd seems about 8 to 9% less than running notfred's diskless client.

I had the same issue... I could not max out the cores with teh dual vm's, I switched to dual SMP's and have not had a single issue yet, although I probably just cursed myself!

Did your production increase compared to the VM setup? Even with Affinity Changer I would think the VM setup to be a bit more productive, if not as user friendly.

Yes actually I went from 3900 to 4100, not sure why as everyone that has done VMs say the other way around Using Linux gave more, but for me using dual SMP's gave more. /shrug

Why would they calculate the same thing differently?

Interesting. Which version of Windows and do you have AC running?

I don't know, that is odd, but I can tell you I have done the math and Fahmon is on the money. Just make sure you force a download of new project data, because if Fahmon doesn't have current points loaded the calcs go to hell.

Well, FAHMon can calculate PPD four different ways (Preferences > Monitoring):

  • All frames
  • Last frame only
  • Last 3 frames
  • Effective rate

Each method can give you a different number. I'm sure both programs would match if they're set to the same thing.
