E8400 Cooling Issues

I have had my E8400 since May 08' and it has always ran quite hot. I have now been getting more issues with it has of late. During highly stressful tasks like 3D Rendering, Video Gaming, and Video Processing my computer has been known to crash.

Running with Real Temp 3.0 and Prime95 for about an hour my high temp reach about 65C, which is quite hot for having an after marking heat sink on it (this one to be exact). My room temperature is usually around 75F and my CPU usually idles around 50-53C. I have reapplied the thermal paste twice since I was worried about an application problem. However, none of this seems to fix my overall issue with the system.

Anyone have any suggestions?
 
Is the cpu OC'd any?

What case do you have and whats the cooling like in it? Any extra fans in it?


Hot video card(s) in it dumping extra heat in the case?



Full machine spec would help with narrowing this down.

That is hotter than the stock cooler idles. Is this overclocked? How did you apply the thermal paste and how much?
 
My E8400 none overclocked idles at 39c 42c with a room temp of 79.5 F

I place a small grain of rise size OCZ Freeze thermal grease in the middle and press the heatsink down and attach it. However, I have the Thermalright 120 TRUE Black cooler, but at one time I did have a Zalman 9700 which gave about the same temps I have now.

Arctic Silver 5 applied a very thin layer (about 1/8 the size of a pea) of thermal paste in the center then I spread it evenly throughout the top of the processor and also applying even smaller amount spread evenly over the area of the fan that will be touching the cpu. I use a plastic zip lock bag to spread the thermal grease without my greasy hands touching it.

I have been building computers since I was 15, I am now 26. I do not believe it comes down to how much or how I am applying the thermal paste. I have overclocked my older E6600 and a slew of Intel/AMD CPUs with absolutely no heating issues.. However, if you do have a better way to do it that you believe will lower my temperature almost 20C by all means, lets talk.
 
does the heatsink feel warm when its overheating? if not, maybe its hardly touching at all. it can happen with those stupid intel push pin things.

I can check, but I have not messed with the voltage at all. I am using the default voltage settings since I am not over clocking.

Also, the Zalman cpu fan doesn't use those horrible push pins. The fan is screwed in to the board as tight as humanly possible without cracking the motherboard in half. It doesn't feel that harm.
 
Check what voltage is being used, even if set to auto.
Voltage is a primary source of extra heat if set too high.
 
If you download CPUz you can quickly check what voltage it is being fed under idle and load just in case you want to save yourself a trip to the bios. For that chip I think default voltage is 1.25v if I'm not mistaken
 
I would reseat the HSF, as you should idle like 40c and if speedstep is on like 35c. On stock clocks you should not get over 50c loaded
 
Core voltage is at 1.15V and what is HSF? Just so you know, I actually just installed the latest BIOS for my eVGA 750i which was released in sept 08' (I have not updated it since May of 08') and I am still getting 47C Idle temperature.

My room temperature right now is 77F so I do not understand why this freaking computer is so damn hot.
 
Ignore idle temps, they are not anywhere near calibrated.
Only consider full load temps.
My idle in Windows never drops below 43C despite downvolting and downclocking the CPU so it reaches about 22C.

I would recommend a Tuniq 120. I got mine from eBay for $20 and it was even lapped! Keeps my E8400 @4GHZ with idle temps about 25C and mid 40's when stressed.
 
The problem is for a TRUE the small grain is not enough as the base is concave, you neeed more TIM
 
You've been doing this for 11 years and don't know what an HSF is?

No, I have never seen that acronym before. It has never come up before in any of my previous conversations. I spend little time on forums and have learned everything either from being self taught or from working as a tech in the early days at Best Buy and Comp USA (early 2000's) as well as the occasional trip to a tech site.

Back on topic, I appreciate everyone's assistance however I still have been unable to fix my idle and full load temps. Full load is around 60C with this Zalman fan (which was previously used on a E6600 that was OC'd and worked like a charm cooling it to 40-42C on full load). This is after running Prime 95 64-bit for about 2 hours on both CPU's.

As for the fan speed, I have always set in the bios to be at full the entire time. I have never liked using the smart fan controller.

I can always try to apply more TIM, and see if that works...just in the past with the same HTS I have never needed more then the allotted amount.
