I have decided to go past 3.6 with my E0 E8400.

Currently I'm @ 4.0 GHz on 1.24v in bios. 1.232 according to CPU-Z. Ram @ DDR 890 with 5-5-5-18 2T @ 2.1v. Not bad, I think. I don't want to go any higher as I would like my cpu and ram to last 3 years or so. This is my first decent OC. Temps under Intel Burn Test max out at 61C on both cores with TJ max set to 100. The best part is I can barely hear my compy. I'm using the stock Tri-Cools set to low on my Antec 300. HSF is a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and RAM is Corsair DHX C4 DDR 800. Just thought I'd share.

jk. not bad. tidy little machine, also. at that vcore and temps it should last at least 10 years. what vid card is that? you dont do pc gaming? and dont block that doorway. its a fire hazard.
 
I found your post interesting. I just bought the Newegg combo of a P5Q Pro and a E8400 along with a Antec Three Hundred case. I OC my E0 stepping E8400 to 4.2Ghz at 1.4v. I can do 1.35v at 4.05Ghz with 450Mhz bus speed. I use voltage stability or whatever it's called in the BIOS to eliminate vdroop and it holds voltage to within .02v. I am only seeing like 56-59 degrees under load depending on room temp. Excuse the cable mess as I just threw in an old 13GB Maxtor to do some benchmarking. I am waiting on a good hd deal to come my way. Then I will clean up the cables and add a window to my side door.


I wouldn't worry about the cpu failing, I have had chips all the way back to 386SX and have been overclocking since 486 days. The chips become obsolete before they ever fail. My sister was using a P4 2.6Ghz and it was running ungodly slow for months. She finally brings it to me and the stock Intel HSF retainer was broke and the heatsink was only holding on one side so the CPU was extremely hot and throttling. I replaced the retainer and it worked like new, if that was an old AMD athlon it would have smoked. I still have a SL2QG Celeron that still works and it has been overclocked from 300Mhz to 448Mhz from day one.

I'll play with lowering voltage on mine as I went straight to 1.35v, I'll report back if the lower voltage is stable. I like your taste in equipment. lol

Lol vanilla, That's a closet door in the background, it's not where I usually keep my tower. That vid card is a HD 4850. I do PC gaming but only on a 22" LCD.

What are you running to test load temps? Prime95, Intel Burn Test?

wow. Im glad I saw this because I was wondering if thats a good way to mount the Artic Freezer on the Three Hundred case. my stuff should be here Monday.

does the freezer come with good compound on it or do I need to buy some?

The Freezer comes with good compound preapplied. You might want to buy some more just to have on hand though, in case you need to reapply for any reason.

okay. I have seen quite a few people doing it so I think I will try that setup. it makes sense because the top 140mm fan should pull out more heat. I just dont know how the airflow and other components are affected.
 
It's good to hear that the stock compound is good. I thought it might not be so I wiped it off and went with AS5 which I had on hand. As far as the mounting orientation, I'm no expert, but I figured warm air travels upward so why not let it just exit through the top.
 
Nice set up! My case is a veritable rats-nest of wires, I can't get 'em straight in there! I am running
4ghz also, but my cpu voltage is 1.39v! Your doing good!

I use Orthos CPU stress test and Intel Burn Test. With Intel Burn Test the machine would reboot at 1.3v at 4050Mhz (450Mhz x 9). So I went back to 1.35v and completed 20 passes. With room temp of 77 degrees, core temp .99 reports about 62 degrees when Intel Burn Test is running. Orthos CPU stress test shows 53 degrees with the same room temp.

Those temps are similar to mine. I have the room temp at about 74 F and at 1.24v at 4005Mhz (445 x 9) I topped out at 61C under Intel Burn Test using RealTemp 2.70.
 
You can push your chip a lot further without issue.
As long as you remain under 1.36V and have decent cooling, you are very safe.

I've been running mine at 1.4V (in BIOS) since January and sometimes a bit higher voltage!
Its been absolutely rock stable.
I dont recommend you do what I am unless you know what you are doing, but you are nowhere near pushing your chip hard.
