E7200 Overclock

Yeah, I know Im a little late. :) Here are my specs to start off:

E7200 on stock cooling
OCZ Platinum Edition DDR2 800mhz RAM
Asus p5e-vm do
ABS 700w power supply

So, Ive been thinking about going ahead and overclocking my processor for a while, so tonight I went on ahead and did it. Im currently sitting on 3.127ghz @ 1.12 volts(or something). I tried 1.1 to start, but when I tried to put the system under loadby playing tf2, the game crashed shortly therein. I turned up the volts slightly, and I hit 65C right before it crashed. This seems awfully high, and I already have the volts about as low as they can go. Also, any number past 333 for my fsb and I dont post. Did I just get unlucky and get a chip that isnt really going to overclock? I set it to auto and I still had the same crashing problem. Im probably just doing this wrong, but I figured I should just ask for advice.

tl;dr: How do I get these parts decently overclocked?
 
I've had a e7200 OC'd to 3.1 GHz for quite some time now on stock cooler and only lately have I had to add voltage, but now I'm also folding smp cores and GPU2 as well so it is showing signs of strain. Mobo is a P5K-VM which is not known for good OCing either. Do you have C1E and speedstep and all those other extra CPU features turned off? (Execute disable bit OK to leave on). Run CPU-z or Everest and find the timings of your RAM and manually set those so 'auto' doesn't skew them and make sure the RAM voltages are set too. Try lowering the multiplier by .5x and run @ 3.0 GHz for stability testing first, maybe the chip'll take a slightly lower speed. Reseat your CPU cooler and use a good thermal paste. My 7200 is running on 1.22v and is only 61C under full load on stock cooler with Qfan set to optimal. I use the ASUS probe utility to check the volts, P5K's are notorious for vdroop - set to 1.2875 in BIOS = 1.22 actual. I'd check yours as well, P5E's might not be so good either. Posting over 333FSB without extra NB voltage is not a surprise, do you have the ability to change this? P5K's do not but I'm not familiar with the P5E's. The CPU can take 65C no problem but I'd get nervous at anything over 75C, maybe invest in a Hyper212 or something, I've seen them for $20 lately.
 
Yeah if you have ever seen the thermal characteristics the OEM laptop manufacturers have allowed C2D chips to hit without failure, 65C is nothing. I have seen high 70's reguarly on a laptop that is over 3 years old.

You need to give it a little more voltage, you are undervolting a ton. While this is great for power reduction, it will not let you hit the speeds you want. Try setting it to stock voltage (probably somewhere around 1.2-1.25) and seeing how high you can go. At this cpu voltage, you will likely need to add more voltage to that older northbridge long before you do the cpu.
 
I had my E7200 clocked at 3.2GHz (8*400) stable, at 1.264V (CPU-Z value). I could do 3.6GHz at 1.35V (not sure about this value) but my cooler at the time (Minja) couldn't handle it for too long. It never crashed under prime at 3.6GHz, but it was too hot for me (75°C on both cores)
The only things I had set to manual in the bios (on a P5Q Turbo) were bus speed (set to 400), DRAM frequency (set to 800), multiplier (set to 8), and CPU voltage (set to one notch above 1.27V if I remember correctly).

I also manually set the RAM to 4-4-4-12 @2.1V (2*2Go of corsair XMS2 DHX)
 
My E7200 would do 3 ghz at stock voltages, I think.

I am running a bit higher, but am on watercooling so temps are just fine. Depending on your mobo, your northbridge might get hot with the added voltage so just keep that in mind when cooling.

But, as mentioned previously, less than 1.2 is actually under-volting the chip, so no need to worry about going back up to at least stock.
 
65C is nothing for an e7200. My old e7200 would do 3.8ghz and hit 75C with TRUE Copper and great airflow. Oh and it took 1.37volts to do that.
 
My 7200 does 9.5*366 @ 1.312v (according to cpu-z). I'm running with a Zalman CNPS8700, and it peaks a 63C.

You probably need to bump the NB voltage to get higher. I don't think it's your CPU holding you back (though if you're overclocking you'll want to ditch the stock cooler quick).
 
Make sure you aren't running linked mem:fsb when upping your fsb.

I had mine at 3.8ghz (400x9.5) with a 1:1 ratio so the ram ran at 800mhz.
