E6850 to Q9650

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU to a quad core Q9650. My computer is used for gaming, burning DVD's, and photoshop. I don't plan on upgrading my whole system for another few years. Has anyone made this CPU upgrade, did you see much off a difference or would this be a waste of money? I run everything stock and don't overclock.

Upgrade, you will increase the life of your system tremendously.

Perhaps the motherboard in 6-8 months as well!

Even though they run at the same clock speed? I assume that gaming will be about the same, unless the game can use the 4 cores.

The Q9650 uses a newer version of the Core 2 architecture which is faster clock-for-clock compared to the older E6xxx and Q6xxx series CPUs. It will be faster even in gaming. And if you decide to overclock, you will have much more headroom with the Q9650 than you have with your current chip.
 
If I had the money I would upgrade to a Q9650 myself, just for shits and giggles. Would be nice to have an extra two cores just in case a new game comes along and uses it to its full potential (and I already have a few).
 
You're probably not going to see a big difference unless you do things that utilize more than 2 cores.
45nm Penryn architecture is like what, ~10% faster than old Conroe chips?

Q9650s aren't exactly that cheap either, its actually more expensive than the i7 920(yes the mobo costs a lot but you're still paying more for a slower CPU) :eek:
