Ok, so I just helped my friend put together a system with a e6850. At idle it runs around 30-40ish. When we use orthos/put load on the processor it jumps all the way up to 80C!!! The program lists the Tjunction at 100C but i really dont think that letting the processor get up to 84C is the best thing to do. Has anyone else had these types of problems using the stock cooler with the e6850?

Are all of the stock intel coolers garbage? i noticed the bottom of the cpu cooler isnt even square, it is round, and it looks like it wouldnt even touch the edges.

We are using Arctic Silver 5 paste. Didnt put that much on, spread it out evenly. I really dont like the tabs on the side of the cooler but it looks like it is flush when pressed down and all of the tabs 'snapped' into place.

anyone have any guesses?

thanks

What program/OS are you using?

It doesnt need to touch the edges. You can use a razor blade to see how flat the IHS is, which will give you an idea of how well the HSF will get in contact with the IHS.

Did that chip come with a full height cooler? or one of the lower height ones? Whats the ambient temp of the case/room?

not sure if it is a full height or not/ i didnt even know they made different ones.

the processor and heatsink both looked flat before.

also the ambient temp of case and room are around 60 F, the a/c was blasting so the room was quite cool.

the temps were being read in vista 64

The newer intel coolers are actually pretty good for a stock cooler. They pale in comparison to anything decent aftermarket cooler but for a stock speed chip they'll do the trick.

What are you using to read temps with? http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Just as a reference my 6850 hung out at about 60C under full load in a much warmer room then yours. Temps read with Core Temp also under Vista 64.

yup i was using the latest speed fan and coretemp, they both reported the same thing, under load it would go up to 80C and even 84C. One time i think it even got up to 89C

You sure you have all 4 pins locked down? I hate the mounting system personally and it's sooooooo easy to miss one. There should be VERY little play once they are locked down. I'm also assuming you removed any plastic sheets/covers? :) And the cores aren't at the edges of the heat spreader so no it doesn't need to cover the whole thing.
