e6750 vs e6700

For the longest time I'd planned on getting an e6750 (or possibly q6600 but that's not relevant here), but I just realized, e6700 has a higher multi and the same stock 2.66 ghz speed. Seems like this would leave me with more room for overclocking...

I'll have an Abit IP35 Pro most likely, and I've already got 2gb 1066mhz Crucial Ballistix. For cooling I was going to reuse my Thermalright XP-120. My components should already allow me to push the fsb quite a bit, but I'm still worried I might hit the wall faster with an e6750 than with an e6700. Assuming that when the price drops come, the e6700 drops similarly (and tell me if you don't think this will be the case), is there really any reason to get the e6750 instead?
 
I've seen people say the FSB ceiling on my motherboard is anywhere from around 430mhz to something like 520 (maybe that was with a modified board?).

Conservatively assuming it's 450mhz, my max overclock with the 6700 would be 4.5ghz, which I'm sure is considerably more than I'll actually reach. At this fsb cap, the max for the 6750 would be 3.6ghz, which sounds like probably the most I'd go for, but I'm not entirely sure. Again, I'll be air cooling with a Thermalright XP-120; does anyone think I could go significantly past 3.6ghz on that?

Of course, if the board can reach the upper 400s, which isn't far fetched, I guess the 6750 would be a better choice, since the CPU would be the bottleneck, not the mobo.
 
Also, the 6750 appears to be a better overclocker. Alot of sites were getting it to almost 4Ghz on air..

I remember seeing one page where it reached 3.92ghz. I couldn't find any others, do you remember which sites had those results?
 
Niether imho, I always thought of the e6700 to be a waste of money compared to a e6600. I really need to read a e6750 review first and i'll report back. 500 fsb though seems high for most boards however if you were thinking about 4.0 ghz.... The e6700 would be a lot easier on ram.
 
People think running 4ghz is very simple...

The motherboard alone will not last long running a 500 FSB 24 / 7.

I would rather have the E6700 which would only need a 400 FSB to reach 4ghz, however, it isn't very easy to find a chip that can reach that speed.

what would be wrong with it running 500 FSB 24/7??
my vote goes towards a e6750. they seem to be hitting some high clocks and the quad core G0 steppings seem to run relatively cool.

I strongly agree. The downside of the 6750 is the multiplier. The lower multi stresses the whole system. You'll need a higher FSB to push the damn thing close to 500 FSB which i wudn't want.

Whereas, with high multi the CPU is the only thing under stress and that is displayed by the temps. So keep the temps in check and you're gud.
Not to mention a lot of ppl will need new mobo's to suit 1333 Mhz CPU's.
Just my 2 cents. :)

You'll likely fry the northbridge chip before long running it that fast. You'll definatly want some good active cooling on it if you're running it at or near those speeds.

I agree with the statement above... Don't buy a chip expecting a 4GHz overclock, if it were that easy, everyone who overclocks would be hitting those speeds.
