E6750 vs e4600/Mobo Combo

Hey guys, I'm completely new to the tower building scene, so please forgive my ignorance. All the help you can give me will be appreciated.

Basically, I'm a gamer on a semi-tight budget. Currently I'm debating on the processor / mobo combo.

I'm debating between the E4600 and E6750.

Now the only differences that I saw (besides the GHZ, which I really don't care about b/c only .2 difference) is the FSB. When I went to look for motherboards I was limited to the ones that had 800 FBS with the E4600. Which, means I won't be able to upgrade to better Dual Core 2's (b/c they need 1333), but I will be able to upgrade to quad core.

I would just like opinions on whether I should put in the $40 so I can later on upgrade to better Dual core 2's (Due to the 1333 FSB). I'm not 100% sure on this but from the research I was doing I felt that with an 800FSB Processor I was limited to crappier motherboards ?

If it doesn't make a difference then I would like to know what you think about which mother board I should get with the E4600. I don't care much for SLI so thats not a problem. I'm also getting a NVIDIA 8800 GT 512, so I don't know if that is any help in deciding on a chip set or something. Also, if it makes any difference I've purchased a Antec Sonata III. Which comes with a 500 watt supply. I would prefer to spend under a $100, but I'm willing to do more if necessary.

If you guys think I should go with the E6750 chip, then which mobo should I get with it.

I'm not sure if I'm following you right but here's my take.

The E4600 runs on an 800mhz FSB speed (or if you want to get technical, a 4x200mhz bus speed). The E6750 runs on a 1333mhz FSB speed (4x333mhz).

This is not entirely correct, but to keep it simple for you, you can run the E4600 on any modern motherboard that is capable of operating at 800mhz FSB. Any modern motherboard that will run 1333mhz FSB is also capable of using an 800mhz FSB, so you don't have to get a lesser motherboard to go with the cheaper processor.

Basically, you should simply aim to pick up a P35 motherboard to go with whichever processor you choose. Personally, in your shoes, I would get something like a Gigabyte P35-DS3L (or R if you need RAID) or Abit IP35-E and the E4500. The difference between the E4500 and E4600 is minimal, and you should be able to overclock the E4500 every bit as far since you'll hit the limits of the chip long before you actually need the higher multiplier, and save money in the process. In fact, if you really wanted to save money you could even get an E4300 and do the same thing. Games these days are so GPU limited that you probably will not notice the difference between the E4x00 and the E6750 chip at all, even in other daily tasks. The only time you'll really see a difference is if you're into benchmarking or encoding, things that make heavy use of the cache.

Any motherboard based on the P35 chipset will also run any of the newer 45nm processors that are coming out, so you don't have to worry about upgrading in the future.

It would be very helpful if you could post your budget so we have some concrete numbers to work with, as well as any other component choices so we can keep that in mind as well

500w Earthwatts - PSU
Gigabyte P35 - MoBo
2x 1GB(DDR2-1066FSB)- Memory

I'm missing the processor and Graphics card. For the Graphic card I'm pretty much set an EVGA 8800 NVIDIA 512. For the processor E4600 (800FSB - 2.4 GHZ). So, let me know what you think.

I think so far you're on the right track. I would get the E4500 since it is $20 cheaper. Trust me, if you overclock (and you should), you won't notice the difference. If you're worried about the ability to overclock, take the $20 you save and get yourself a better heatsink & fan (like this one). Even if you don't overclock, you won't notice that 200mhz at all. I've never owned a processor that wouldn't overclock at least 200mhz.

I would also change the memory if you still can. At this point, as cheap as it is, there's no reason to not get 4gb. You would be better off with 4gb of DDR2-800 than you will be with 2gb of DDR2-1066.

Also, if you have the money, go for the GTS 512. If not, the GT is a solid choice.

Oh wow, thanks for the info ... I thought I was ready to purchase my GPU and Processor, but I will do more more research now.

The reason I wanted the E4600 is because Call Of Duty 4 needs 2.4ghz to run everything at max and I've never been through the overclocking process. Plus is that fan you recommended the only thing I would need to keep that processor cool?

I paid some wear near $70 for those 2 Gigs b/c they're 1066, so I don't know unless you know of some deal on G.skillz or what not. I didn't get the DDR2-800. Because I eventually, once 2.4 isn't enough any more will learn to OC.

If you're going off the system requirements, that 2.4ghz is probably referring to the P4 architecture. Your ability to run everything at max will depend more on your graphics card than your processor, which is why I suggested the GTS over the GT.

Nvidia made things confusing by coming out with the 8800GTS 320 & 640mb versions, then the 8800GT 512 (G92 architecture, product refresh) which was faster than both of them. Then they released the G92 version of the GTS with 512mb of ram. The new GTS is faster than the 8800GT. All you have to do is make sure you're getting the GTS 512mb and you'll be getting the new one.

As far as the memory, it's not a huge loss, 2gb is sufficient. For $70 you could have picked up 4gb of ddr2-800, though. When you're overclocking, you can at least drop the multiplier on the processor and crank up the FSB speed to match the memory you bought, which will give a minor speed advantage.

If you are set on getting the e4600, you can just set the FSB to 250 (which any C2D board should do), and the processor will run at 3GHz. I can do that with mine without raising the voltage. (I am not using the auto function on volts either, but set it to "normal").

I've got my E4500 running at 3Ghz folding and it purrs like a kitten.

Plenty fast and most games are GPU bound anyways. Keep the $$ for a future upgrade on the vidcard.

Thanks guys for all the replies, I think I will be sticking to the E4600 for the money save vs the more GHZ. And as for the Graphics card I think I'm gonna go with the GT OC 512 cuz it beat a GT Ult(768) and GTS 320. And is around $200. I can't afford more than that

That is a good point, but would that make sense? I mean wouldn't I have to get Ram with Heatsinks since they're are going to be 4 of them running next to them and on top of that get a memory fan???
