E6700 or E6600 (Can't decide)

I still can't seem to decide which processor to get, I want something that will outperform the FX-62, which I know the E6700 does all the time and E6600 does most of the time, I'd also like for the processor to OC well. The problem is that I only have air cooling, planning on using the Zalman CNPS9500, PW5-DH and Mushkin XP2-6400 Xtreme Performance Black Series, I'm wondering if I will be able to get a decent enough overclock on the E6600 despite its lower multiplier. I'm thinking that if I can hit 3Ghz, 333Mhz FSB, 5:4mem dividor, 833mhz mem speed, with the E6600 stable and preferably somewhere around stock voltage I would be happy, would this be much of an issue? Would the processor be enough to run along an X1900XTX and eventually a DX10 card? I want my system to be quite futureproof, last atleast 3 years and run games well. The E6600 is going for about $410 CAD with the E6700 at $680, now, I have the money to spend on the E6700 but would it really be worth it? Even if the processor has an extra 200mhz headroom, I'm assuming I could hit 3Ghz with the E6600 no problem on air and esentially have an X6800 for for $270 less than the other alternative. I know this is me being a little caucious but the reason is I basically get a one in every three years chance to upgrade my computer, last time I bought only 512MB RAM (not nearly enough nowdays) , XP2500, Radeon 9500 Pro wich was allright but I don't want to make any mistakes because I won't have another chance for maybe 3 years to do a full system overhaul, I can update individual parts however, but I don't prefer it.

My advice: learn to upgrade individual parts. You're way better off spending $1000 now and another $1000 in a year and a half than to spend $2000 now and have it last 3 years.

And most reports say the E6700 doesn't OC any more than the E6600, but who knows, cause hardly anyone has either of them yet. So I would definitely recommend the E6600.

First of all get the 6600 and oc it, save urself sum cash. All of the new ones will oc to 3 ez. Leme put it this way, a64 3200 which I have oc from 2 to 2.6 ez on air. Conroe has proven in tests/reviews to do even better. And any fx-60+ will handle at least the first line of dx10 without problems. Cpu bottlenecks are hard to come by at the res gamers playat these days.
 
Do not buy either until Kentsfield plays out. With quad core cpus due out by the end of the year, why jump on dual core now? :)

Well I've been running an XP2500 and 512Mb of RAM for the past three years, so I'm thinking any time, especially now is a good time to upgrade, I'll have time to mess around with the new computer during the summer before school starts. I've allready been waiting for conroe for the past 2 months, was initially going to get the X2 4400+ but decided to wait it out for conroe.

And to the first poster, I don't really mind upgrading in my parts but I want to take a big jump from my current system right now instead of over the years, the other problem with what you suggested is that I'm a student and don't have steady income, I'm starting university in the fall and lots of my money is going towards that, so I want to pick up this computer while I still can, during classes I won't be able to work so I won;t have any money, the next time I could probably upgrade my computer would be when the winter session ends, so sometime around May, I'm hoping to get a good DX10 card then and that's about it. I wouldn't want to get a lower end rig now for the simple reason that I prob wouldn't be able to hold onto my money for another year in order to pick up new parts, and who knows what will happen in May and whether I will have the ability to pick up new parts. It's hard to plan that far ahead into the future

Probably because the cheapest Kentsfield will be at least $700 and run at 2.4GHz and not offer any added value for 95% of the SW ? :rolleyes:

an E6600 will easily OC to 3.0ghz on air (stock HSF), which is more than enough to shit all over AMD's parade.

Spending $200 extra on the 6700 is a fool's game. If you want a fast system, use that extra $200 to buy good memory or a good, stable power supply.

The 6600 is *THE* chip to buy, no questions asked.

I disagree.
Some people don't like to OC but still want the latest and greatest, therefore the X6800 will be *THE* chip to buy, I know many people in this camp.

Well obviously this guy want to overclock. E6600 FTW. I also recommend Asus P5W HD Deluxe. Read this:

However, the only board in our testing that exceeded a 400FSB was the ASUS P5W-DH that reached 445MHz with our amazing little E6600 before running out of MCH voltage.

TBH there are already people posting on the OcUK forums that have the E6600 and the X6800. The only difference between both is the stock speed and the fact that you can adjust the multiplier on the X6800.

Both CPU's have been clocked up to 3.6Ghz and ran under load running "dual prime" on air with similar heatsink/fan and are getting the same temps of around 70C.

The latest and greatest therefore is still at this point, questionable. If you want a bigger E-dick and would like to display an X6800 in your sig.. then thats cool. Just note that the posting above you who has the E6600 will be running at the same speeds but will have a few hunder pounds/dollars in his pocket to use on his new G80 or R600 when they arrive!!!
