Are the new core 2 Duo processors really bad at multitasking?

I get great performance in single apps but when I try to window and play a video with a game running the video will not run. My system is stable according to all benchmarks. I am overclocked @ 3.2 800 ram 4-4-4-12.

7950GX2 Vid card
Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi , latest bios

2 gig , 1 gig video ram, I am thinking the drivers for this 2 in 1 7950 GX2 still arent up to par. Performance is great, 13 seconds super Pi 1m, 10k in 3dmark 07, but swapping tasks, specifically windowing from a game and playing a video create major problems.

It can be any number of things.

How much is sitting in memory (check task manager)?
How fast is your disk, is it defrragmented?
Is your paging on a seperate disk/partition?

Basically, grinding/slowness like you describe make me think that memory is being paged.

The rest will be fine.

The problem isn't with Core 2 Duo and multi-tasking. Mines been great so far, and even better than my dual processor Opteron 254 machine was. The problem can be anything from drivers to a bad piece of hardware.

What OS are you running BTW? I noticed that Windows XP Professional x64 Edition was faster on my Opteron setup than it is on my Core 2 Duo. On the duo I actually switched to XP 32 and the responsiveness improved. (I blame drivers for this, not the processors EM64T implementation or the operating system itself.)

Just out of curiosity…

Are you using any windows customizations? Better yet, post you hijack this log.

We got a batch of new HPs in here at the office and the standard OS load was causing some really strange stuff to happen. One of the more obvious symptoms was jittery windows animations when toggling back and forth between running programs. (Even using ALT+TAB)

We hosed the system out (Fdisk/format/reload), installed all the windows updates via slipstream and then installed updated WHQL drivers for everything and they run smooth as silk now.

I kinda wish we hadn’t just nuked them now because I’ve seen about twenty different versions of this post on the net and I’m wondering if there’s any commonality.

First guess would be drivers for vid/network/scsi next guess would be AV software. third would be spyware.

Post your HT logfile please.

You might also want to make sure that you aren't running the JMicron controller drivers etc.. Some people have been running into problems with those drivers.

I found that the sound performance was pretty low when the system was under load. Just for fun I threw in a SBLive and things got much better.

multitasking is fine here, i can tab between CS ot HL2 and firefox or any other program quite quickly, my old P4 used to hang when restoring a minimized source game.
