E6600 vs A64 3700

I'm currently running an A64 3700 Clawhammer and was just wondering exactly how much faster a C2D E6600 would be in real world performance. Would it be worth the cost of stripping my system down and rebuilding? I'm pretty sure my CPU holds my 8800GTS back a bit. Should i go for it now or hang on for price cuts?
 
Hell ya! It'll be worth it. So much faster, and it overclocks well.

However, if you can hold off on it, there are rumours of the quad core Q6600 becoming $266 dollars soon. Wouldn't you just love that?
 
The quads are supposed to be that price in 3rd quarter.

However next price cut is in April like the above poster.
 
Yeah its definatelly faster and more responsive, but if you can wait - than wait 4 the price cuts or new cpus like 6650,6750,6850 or new quads. or try ocing your 3700, dont know about Clawhammer but SanDiego is real easy to oc.
 
I'm thinking the e6420 will be the chip to have soon. As it will still have the 1066 FSB (8x multiplier), but it will have 4Mb of cache!

I don't want a native 333FSB chip as it will have a lower multiplier, IE: be harder to overclock.
 
I had 2x252 opterons and traded that rig for a E6600 on a DS3. My current benches, render times, and gaming have all improved enough that I physically notice the time it takes to complete tasks. I'm very impressed with the E6600. I've got mine clocked at 3.2 and it runs cool under load.

It has also put off any upgrade path till I absolutely feel like a quad or new tech that is worth while comes out. I'm just happy enough with the performance I don't feel like looking at other processors yet...
 
the diff between a s754 clawhammer using maybe 100 or 133 fsb and ddr vs a c2d rig will make it seem like until now your were using an abacus.

That is bulk price, not what you will see in stores....
 
Sounds like i definitely should get myself an E6600. I shall hang on for the price cuts next month i think. If the E6600 drops to £150 ish, i'll snap one up. Anyone got any advice on what motherboard to use? Bear in mind that i may fancy dropping a quad core in it at some point. Also, what speed ram would i need for overclocking the E6600 to 3Ghz? cheers
 
DDR2800 would be plenty as even at stock that could get you to 3.2ghz :) (so you do not have to worry about OCing RAM).

I would recommend either the P5B-E or one of its bigger brothers (P5B Deluxe, P5B Deluxe Wifi) or possibly one of the 680i Nvidia Boards (from eVGA, BFG, etc.)

Read the thread on the price cuts. It may be bulk price, but us consumers get discounts.

For example, look at the E6300 on the chart. It says its $183 unit price per K. Hey look, that's exactly what it is right now at Newegg. :D
 
I have, and yes sometimes that holds true, but the QX is currently around 600 in bulk and around 1000 retail...

I am just saying do not 100% count on 266.
 
I just upgraded from a x2 4600 to a E6600. Big improvement. If you are going to upgrade from an A64 3700, make sure to bolt your case to the floor so it doesn't fly away when you upgrade to a E6600.

pshhh, i totally ignored the athlon 64 route and upgraded from a barton 2500+ to a e6300. talk about a major difference in gaming.

I did the exact same with my barton 2500+, radeon 9600pro and a 40g hdd. :D
 
Don't be like my friend who insists that 754 is still good enough. C2D is great, and you will not regret it.

P.S: The regular C2D uses less power than a 754 Athlon.

why wait?? the prices will always drop on computer parts if you wait 6 months. Get an ASUS board that is Quad Core ready and dive in!! :D

with that philosphy, you'll never get a new chip!

trying to play the technology markets to maximize price is FUTILE. buy the best stuff you can, when you need it, to do the stuff you need to do. don't waste time trying to save a few bucks, because you only cost yourself obselesence and lack of utility in return.

From your post, "the stuff you need to do" sounds like it's primarily gaming. That said:

You shouldn't upgrade the 3700 right now. It's probably holding back your GPU less than you think. What games are you playing? By the time K8L comes out and the quad core pricing drops, the DX10 games we're all waiting for will start releasing. You'll have much better options in front of you then to serve your needs.

If you're doing other burdensome tasks that are being impacted by your CPU (doubtful by the sound of it) then now is the time to upgrade. grab a C2D and commit to a new platform all together, and don't dick around waiting for rumor price cuts to emerge.

Decisions decisions! My system gets used for a bit of everything really. Bit of encoding, surfing the net, burning cd's/dvd's, playing games etc. My 3700 still doesn't feel slow, i just feel that it isn't an ideal match for my GTS. Plus i feel i'm missing out on the dual core revolution. Will have some spare cash in may with my birthday coming up so i'm feeling the upgrade itch! heh
