E6600 Temps?

Running stock cooler on a E6600. Just loaded it up and the american megatrends bios for the asus p5b listed the temp at bootup @ 54c. Have not used a core2duo before but this seems way to hot. Any opinions?
 
Stock cooler and stock speeds thats hot ( for idle I assume ) .

Did you install it yourself? you may have appled to much thermal grease. Thats not uncommon.
 
Yeah thats at idle and I thought that was way to hot. Stock cooler so thats using the grease already applied. Going to go to the store and buy some arctic silver and clean the processor and hs and see if that changes anything.
 
I'd check the case too to make sure you have adequate air flow. If all else fails a good artic cooler from Newegg is about $40 shipped.
 
There is plenty of airflow but at any rate 54c is way to hot after sitting for 2mins after boot.

This is a good place to start and see how warm the ambient room temperature is, then make sure that you have all 4 of the posts pushed all the way down and clicked in - it takes just one for an uneven surface and that can throw your temps off.
 
Well the bios shows the case temp as 30c. Just put on arctic silver and I am still sitting at 50-54c at boot. Very strange.
 
Anyone know how fast the fan spins on the stock core2duo cooler? Seems kind of slow at 1400rpm when the processor is sitting at 60c
 
maybe download speedfan and see what that registers your temps as, though i cant recall a bios being that far off.

On the P5B-Plus i have sitting here, running an E6600 the fan is running at 2000 to 2100 rpm and the cpu temp is 39C and my ambient room temp is around 72F

What are your vcore voltages running at?
 
Alternatively you could just use the Home Depot case - a square piece of wood that you can drill screws into so it doesn't move around.

Ideally an open case with no obstruction is the best way to get air to your heatsink and fan combo. You just don't see a lot of computers built that way because it is impractical :)

I think the stock intel fans are low RPM (nothing more than 1700-2100). Theoretically you could overvolt them but with a cheap fan that might cause unwanted results like excessive whining and blowing out the motor :p

Should I believe it? Of course not.

infect0: The only important temperature is your core temperature. Manually set your core voltage to the Intel default of 1.325 volts before booting up and don't use AUTO.
Use CoreTemp 0.95 in Windows and report your findings.
 
Hell I ran my e6600 with no fan for a few days with a thermalright 120 and never got much above 40c, but ya check the program he linked, it updates quick, when you drop the load on the cpu the temp drops 10c instantly.
 
Also try smearing the paste with your finger in some saran wrap before installing. I was getting my p4 upto temps of 85 deg C under load, and when i finally pulled it off one weekend to check only one half of the IHS had grease because of the way i had pushed in the pins :rolleyes:. Smearing it makes sure all the IHS will be covered with the grease.

What case do you have and what fans you have on it?
 
Sorry for the slow response ran into another problem with this brand new asus p5b. Seems that the onboard lan is fubar. Have been trying to get it to work but with no luck. Xp finds the device, drives install fine, port lights up when connected but cannot pull an ip address from the router or straight from the modem even tried different cables. I think the mobo might have been toast from the start but I am going to plug in nic and update the machine to everything current and see if that helps any.
 
Mine idles at 38-40 and thats with speed fan enabled, at 2.4 it idles at 45 ish too. My room temps is pretty warm though. What is the limit of these cpus, 60c ??
 
those temps are way high im sitting overclocked to 3.37ghz on stock volts with a thermaltake big typhoon with antec formula 5 and im only hitting 60oC according to coretemp @ full load even when i ran the stock cooler @ stock settings i would idle at 35oC and full load was 48oC to 50oC all on a asus p5n-e sli inside a thermaltake xaser3, as the guys before have said i would check your airflow take off one of your blank cdrom bays and let the air in if temps drop your temps u found the culprit. but hey im in scotland and your lucky if my room ambients are above 21oC lol

My room temps are pretty high, @30c, and with a Tuniq Tower I idle at 36-37 with a mild OC to 3.2 (9x356), load is in the 50's and never yet 60 on this motherboard/cpu/hsf combo. I've always thought that some motherboards just run hotter than others, and if your case doesn't flush out that heat it just builds and builds. That's why I got a TT Armor full tower. Overall with the case and the Tuniq and five fans, my temps are in control. What hsf (cpu cooler) are you using? If it's the stock Intel cooler, you'll want to invest in something better!
 
have to agree with Pepsiennis get a better heat sink and check that airflow artic freezer7 is a cheap heatsink and will perform many times better than the stock 1 not that the stock 1 is all that bad.
but yeah some mobo's run hotter than others this p5n-e sli i use does increase temps in the case by a good few degrees more than any other board ive had in this case so i had to make damn sure the air flow is 100% to stop pockets of hot air really rampin up the temps and the xaser 3 is a pretty big case and i still had to adjust things
