This past weekend, I was on my main rig and just randomly checked my temps. My CPU for some reason was running around 55C idle. It isn't overclocked and I have good airflow in my case. I have a heatsink/fan on it with some AS5 in between. I opened my case and took my heatsink/fan off and noticed the AS5 hadn't spread properly when I put it on last about a month ago. It normally runs at around 32C.
I cleaned both the heatsink/fan and CPU off and put some fresh AS5 on it and put them back on the mobo. I started it back up and it loaded XP and then randomly shut off after I logged in. I turned it back on and it randomly shut off during the booting process. I started it up again and went into the Bios. I just thought to look at the temps and it said my CPU was running at 72C and was rising. It got up to 77C when I shut it off.
I just turned it on about 20 minutes ago to try and see if it the temps would get too high or if it would randomly shut off just to see if it was a fluke last weekend. It loaded XP perfectly and then I checked the temps and my CPU was at 80C and rose to 84C when I turned it off.
Now I just reset my CPU and put my heatsink/fan back on it and looked in the Bios and at first it was at 52C and rising slowly and it just randomly shut off.
I had a problem about a month ago with it randomly shutting off, but I didn't have a problem with temps then. My Last Thread
Any idea about what the problem could be? Would a new heatsink/fan fix it? The tube of AS5 that I have is a little over a year old. Got it when I built the rig at the end of '06. Not to mention, I think my heatsink/fan is a little loose. I thought it was supposed to fit tight, but recently, it wiggles a tiny bit but still fits on the CPU.
