Today my brother went out and got a combo from Fry's. It's L629A339. We use a Gigabyte DS3 board with bios F7. Memory is Corsair Twin2X2048-6400C4. Currently running intel stock hsf, so temp is like up the roof...lol. I must say the F7 bios is so freaking awesome!! When you leave the voltage to auto, it does all the work for you!! What we did first was put the multiplier to 6 and test to see how far the corsair memory go. We started the FSB @ 430mhz and change the frequency in 2mhz increment until it stop posting. Computer posted with the FSB at 470 mhz and memory is 940 mhz. When I put fsb to 472mhz, it froze and I had to reset cmos. So I put the multiplier to 8 and it didnt post. I down the fsb to 430mhz and it posted at 3.44ghz. So I ran memtest to make sure the memory didnt give me any errors at that speed. Somehow memtest show the cpu at 3.87ghz
I disregard it, ran it for 1hr10min and it pass 3 times. I know that's not long enough, but to me errors usually occurs pretty fast.
I booted into windows and ran Super PI 1M. It finished in 15 sec, I was like wat the...I open up speedfan, cpuz, and coretemp. Speedfan show that my cpu is @ 61C. CoreTemp was like 77 or something. I right click on My Computer and chose Properties. Windows show that it's running at 3.87Gz!! Maybe that is the reason why Super PI finish 1M in 15 sec. CPU-Z show that it's running 3.44ghz. Now I'm running just 1 instant of Prime 95; speedfan show temp at 67-69C. So how do I tell windows to read the right speed because obviously my bios and cpu-z isnt wrong.
I will wait until monday to pick up the scythe infinity and do some more overclocking. I will also run 2 instant of prime95 for 24 hrs to test stability. I just had a thought.....maybe this F7 bios can automatically tell how high the cpu can post? Because at 9 X running 430mhz that is 3.87ghz!! Maybe I'm just crazy
Any OC guru want to share some thoughts/tips/recommendation on what the hell is going on???
EDIT: Will take pictures when I find my digicam
EDIT2:
EDIT3: Temp were getting too high. I'm going to wait until I get a better cooler.
