E6600 or E6700?

Well, these two chips have just had their prices cut here in the UK. I was going to plump for the E6600 but the E6700 has had a massive £100+ slashed off the price down to £209. The E6600 on the other hand has had a much more conservative price cut of £40 down to the £150 mark. Which to get?
 
I was thinking about saving my money but on the other hand, i want as big a jump as possible over my old S754 3700 clawhammer.
 
Get the 6600 and put the extra money into cooling it, you'll probably end up with more performance anyway.
 
Well, the extra cache (haha) on the E6700 is nice, but the E6600 price cut makes it a steal. What do you plan on running with it OS wise? Vista? 32 or 64 bit?
 
Well, i've almost finalized my shopping list:

Asus P5N32-E SLI NF680i SLI
2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Comes to £426.70

Anyone got any advice before i order?

There is no extra cache on the E6700. Both processors have 4MB of shared L2 cache.
 
Apologies. For some reason I was thinking of the 2mb of cache on the E6400 and not the E6600. Brain fart on my part.

As for pricing difference, the price drop of the E6600 makes it a relative bargain for dual core CPU love. I never really understood why the price difference was over $200 for 266Mhz difference.
 
the large price differences are for people like me who are stupid.

i first bought the 6700 and realized i could have just bought the 6600 and overclocked it for the same performance. then i decided to join the special olympics and bought the X6800 for double the price of the chip i just bought for double the money i could have.

basically im a double dumbass... :D

oh well... the X6800 OC's like crazy so who cares. stick with the 6600 and dont pull a me.

Its not too terrible to buy a 6700 considering that its what the 6600 cost a few days ago. $100 extra for a few hundred mhz headroom is not too bad these days. Especially considering the shitty batches of 6600's that have been coming out of late. Just check the forums at Xtremesystems and you can read for yourself. I just noticed the Xeon 3070 is down to $349.00 and that may be the best choice since many speculate they come from better batches.
 
I would personally go with the E6600 which is what im getting now because of my budget but yea just save yourself some cash and get the E6600 or spring for QUAD!
 
I vote E6600 as well. Overall a better price to performace ratio when debating on OCing.

Remember that the difference in the two when overclocking is for the most part diminishing returns, in other words lets say the e6600 only gets to 3.6 while the e6700 gets to 3.8. Well, not to much difference in reality.

I'm not sure on the exact average overclocks the e6700 gains over the 66, but still I just wanted for you to keep that in mind. I have an e66 at 3.6 and lovin' it. :)

what about a Xeon 3060 at around $250?

yeah... but i bought the 6700 when the Core 2's were like a month old. now i know its different now but the same thing is gonna happen over and over in the quick CPU circle we are in now.
 
So yea i went to check my cart today on newegg and i duno wtf their problem is with going instock for a day then running out of the same item again but the EVGA 8800GTS video cards are out of stock AGAIN and i was going to order tonight but i guess thats out of the question unless they just pull them off the shelves for a second like they did their RAM.:mad: :mad:
