E6600 Heatsink options

I do not plan to overclock, might later on... What is the best way to go? Use the OEM heatsink or go with aftermarket and if so which one...?
 
You can also do a small overclock with the stock cooler just fine. Like say to 2.8 or something
 
The Intel heatsink and fan is more than adequate for the majority of users.

You can run a C2D at 3300 MHz to 3400 MHz and be Orthos stable with the Intel cooler.

Don't go telling me outside in the garage temps either ;)
 
With an inside temp of 19C my E6400 hits about 71C to 72C running Orthos at 3400 MHz with the Intel heatsink and fan.

If going over 70C scares you then back your overclock down to 3200 MHz. At this level you can drop the core voltage back to default at 1.325 volts and be rock solid Orthos stable at about 60C.

Most users never run anything as demanding as Orthos on both cores at the same time.

I was using Premiere Elements on the weekend which uses both cores and the temps were nowhere near 70C. The majority of games are still single core so once again it won't hit 70C for most users.
 
If your going to clock that high, for gods sakes spend $30 and get an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and drop your temps into the 40's. No reason at all to punish your CPU with temps like those just to say you did it on stock cooling. If you have enough money to build the system, you surely have $30 to save your processor if your going to clock that high. :rolleyes:
 
I think people worry way too much about high temps. Intel designed the C2D to be very robust and can run reliably up to 85C. The C2D doesn't start to throttle the MHz back until the CoreTemp reaches 80C which helps keep it under its max of 85C.

That means that running your processor at 70C isn't going to hurt anything. If Intel was worried about too many RMA returns for dead processors then they would redesign them so they started to throttle back at 70C.

As I said, if 70C bothers you then dial it back a notch and you can still run a C2D, nicely overclocked, with the OEM Intel heatsink and fan. If you plan to run both cores fully loaded 24/7 then a better heatsink is a good idea but it's not necessary for the majority of users running a mild overclock.

I boosted up the MHz and gave it 1.48 volts under full load to create some serious heat.



If I can ever get 4+ hours out of this thing without it catching on fire I'll submit it to the [H] OC database as the quickest Intel cooled E6400.

I gave it a run at 1.55v for almost 8 hours and she held stable at 71C under my Thermalright XP120

I am running the same speed at 1.5vcore and I am under 70c loaded with a Vapochill Micro.

yeah after some tinkering i dropped it to 3.3 from 3.33 and 1.55 to 1.425 volts


Temps at full load dropped from 71 to 55 :cool:


I figured the extra 30MHz wasn't worth it, lol

Is a Thermaltake CPU cooler better than the INTEL one?
