E6420 or E6600

I was wondering if i should go with the E6420 or E6600. is it worth spending the additional $40 to get the E6600? Also, i am planning on OC them, but not hardcore. I would appreciate any advice on which one i should get. Thanks
 
I'm considering the same thing. I'm looking for maybe 3.2-3.4 OC, which shouldn't be the biggest deal with either (3.2 for the E6420). If you are going for a lower OC, the only difference is based on if your ram speed can keep up with the FSB I believe.
 
well since these days you can't really be guaranteed 3.6 from either processor (I suppose you never were), I'd get the 6420. It also depends though on what sort of ram and mb you are intending to get. If you have ram that can do 900 or 1000 mhz either stock or overclocked, then you won't be limited to a 400fsb with cheaper ddr-800. Then you might be able to try doing 8x450 or higher. Finally you obviously need a good heatsink if you're gonna clock that high, and I'm not sure whether you're willing to invest in something of tuniq tower calibre or better (thermalright ultra 120 extreme is the best air cooling currently available besides opening your case and turning on the A/C right next to it) :p

In all honesty though if you get either the e6600 or e6420 today I wouldn't count on getting past 3.2

But then again maybe you will :)
 
Are the new chips that low on the OC? I remember people hitting 3.4 pretty easily (I could be mistaken though). 3.2 is still a very nice overclock regardless.
 
I don't think the cpus are the problem recently. People were getting great overclocks when most users were all using the Intel P965 chipset. The Nvidia chipset does not overclock as well and there is a lot of junk, bargain bin DDR2 memory now that also doesn't overclock worth a damn.

If you want a system that can run 3200 MHz and beyond without any problems then get either processor and invest in a motherboard with either the Intel P965 or P35 chipset and get some memory that uses Micron D9GMH ICs while you're at it.

Have a look at the [H]ard OC database, especially the E6300 results. The vast majority of motherboards that can get the most out of this chip need to be able to run at a high FSB and for some reason they are almost all Intel based boards. That says a lot to me.
 
I don't remember honestly... 3.2, 3.4, they all sound pretty low to me but I suppose it's because I have snobby tastes since I bought my conroe last year ;)
 
A lot of people were getting over 3.2Ghz with the E6420s. I got up to 3.5Ghz with minor vcore adjustments using a P965 motherboard. Save the $40 and put it towards your next CPU upgrade.
 
The 6420 has an 8X multiplier.

The E6600 has a 9X multiplier. Personally get the E6600 and o'clock the hell out of it. May i recommend the 6750 with a P35 mobo because thats way better than the two cpu options you just mentioned and cheaper too.

All comes down to the mobo. Depends on which chipset you're going with. Again i recommend the P35 with the 6750.
 
Right now I have a GA-P35C-DS3R. Either chip will be got at ~$150 (most probably the E6600) and both with from good batches. The E6600 hit 3.6 at 1.367v (although it was WC), so I don't think OCing that will be an issue at all. For the same price, I figure E6600 is the clear choice.

Also will be running this with either 2x1 or 4x1GB Ballistix 6400 4-4-4-12. Got two kits when on rebate, undecided if I'm gonna use both or sell one.
 
It all depends on luck, really. For instance, my E6420 does 425x8 (3400MHz) at 1.35V, while some people top out at 2700 at this voltage. I received this CPU three days ago, btw.
