Hey guys. Built my woman a new system a couple months back and just for curiosities sake (she'd kill me if she knew I asked), what kind/how much OCing are people getting out of the E6420 with the stock HSF and no voltage adjustment? I haven't OCed since the Athlon XP I'm using and have never OCed an Intel processor. Thanks.
 
check the e6420 thread. I'm thinking you can go to about 2.8ghz without turning up the vcore safely. Every chip is a little different so yah, you'd have to try it and see.

I would say you could go a little higher, but anyway, no harm in raising it 1 notch.
 
The one I'm running has hit 3 GHZ with stock voltage. Pretty sure I'm gonna leave it there, it isn't my system so I'm not gonna push for more.

Usually 8 x 400 is possible for the E6420 as well as the revision B2 E6400 chips at default voltage. Manually setting it to 1.35 volts in the bios will get you pretty close to the typical Intel default of 1.325 volts at idle. Don't leave the core voltage set to AUTO or default when overclocking. Some boards like my P5B Deluxe get absolutely stupid with extra core voltage and heat when left at AUTO while overclocking. Asus jolting 1.58 volts into my CPU is a little too helpful for me.

The revision L2 E6300 / E6400 typically need far more than default voltage to run 3200 MHz reliably.
 
What about the other part of my question? What kind of OC? FSB or Mult?
 
Wow, almost a full GHz overclock. Not bad at all! Of course, I'm using stock cooling as well, so I'd have to be extra careful...though it DOES do a fine job.
 
my 6420 likes voltage, took 1.40v to be stable at 3.2ghz, I did it with the stock HSF btw, now I'm on water though.
 
Same...my e6420 needed a little voltage to get to 3.2. Hell, I need 1.525 (bios) for 3.4ghz but that's where the tuniq tower comes in.
 
Does your E6420 need voltage because your E6420 needs voltage or are you giving your E6420 extra voltage to compensate for the nvidia chipset you're running? On a board with the Intel P965 or P35 chipset I bet your cpu would run stable with less voltage.

A lot of these "bad processors" didn't start to appear until boards started being released with a chipset that doesn't overclock nearly as reliably or as high as what Intel delivers. Head to the results for the E6300 in the [H]ard OC database which pretty much says it all. You need a good eye to spot any nvidia boards in the top 50.
