P5B + E6400 + ?? = Bliss.

I've settled on the board and processor, and I'm pretty sold on Corsair XMS from my past experiences, but I'm not sure how fast to pick. A 2GB PC800 kit is $200, thats with 5-5-5-12 timings, it seems there is one step up that does 4-4-4-12 @ PC800 or 5-5-5-12 at like PC932. Based on where the E6400s are topping out should I really splurge on the high end stuff, or stick to my guns (everything is one back from the "best" 8800GTS, E6400 etc) and be confident that this stuff will clock well?

For reference, here is my newegg wishlist: http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=3560584

Random: any other suggestions on a sound card?

again all depends on how much are you willing to spend, i wouldnt go over 800mhz rams untill you made sure the mobo supports them correctly, and by default it will downgrade the 800mhz rams with cas 4 to 667mhz, so you'll have to adjust that too when you install the new ones.

for the sound card (if you really want one) get some soundblaster X-Fi from creative labs, since those are the only one supporting windows vista's OpenAL (as far as i know)

I've personally found that a lot of the budget rams will be able to run 800 4-4-4 with 2.1v or so. If that's all you're after, then you can probably get away with getting something cheaper.

However, that said, the buffalo firestix are real cheap now. I'm not sure if newegg still has them in stock but the firestix 6400's were running I think 185ar on newegg for 2x1gb. Those are d9gmh and should scale real well.

Also, the p5b board only supports voltages up to 2.1v natively. I somehow got a board that has options up to 2.45, but none of the ones above 2.1v work. I'll be working to see if I can figure out a pencil mod for more vdimm, but as it is, there's already a traditional VR based mod available for more juice.

As reference, my firestix were able to run 800 3-3-3 with 2.2v. They say this might take a little luck with gmh's, but a fair amount of people are being well successful. If you're thinking about breaching 3.6ghz instead of 3.2, then you'd probably need something that can do 450mhz, so I'd be looking at the firestix or something.

My kingston value ram 667 (rated 667 5-5-5-15 1.8v) can do 800 4-4-4-12 2.1v, but up at 900mhz with 2.1v, I'm still struggling for stability with 5-6-6-18.

I would go with 800. Then you are for sure going to get at least 800mhz out of it and do not have to worry about OCing the RAM unless you want to go over 3.2GHZ

I guess I lost sight of the fact that by default the bus speed is 667, 800 should give me plenty of head room, if I have to push to 900 (425, which is a huge clock!) I can bump the vdimm a bit and be fine. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll spend the dough on the Corsair I trust.

Also, P5B vanilla is prone to not OC as well consistently.

I'd check out the P5B-E rev 1.02G or the P5N-E SLI.

Also, that Corsair HX620 = superb quiet PSU, but i can't imagine that's a very good price.

I can get it for the same or less on sales here in Canaduh.

Why not just the HX520?

It's more than enough for your proposed system.

How does the P5B-E clock better? Its the same core chip and BIOS? I don't want to pay for features I'm not going to use. I haven't looked at P5N because I am not going to run SLI, I don't see the cost being worth it.

I'm getting the 620 to give my self some room, I may be adding a bunch of disks and an HDTV tuner card, so I want to be safe. I'll check on prices, but I like newegg's support and am willing to pay a premium.

I definatly like the Buffalo Firestix, great reviews, and that seems to be the hot chip - I'll definatly switch over.
