E6400 Vs E6600 On DS3

Exactly as the title says. If I get a Gigabyte DS3 and some ddr2 800 ram, which will most likely clock higher. I know that with the propper mobo, the E6600 should overclock to a higher clock than the 6400, but I'm talking about with a DS3. I ask because I know the E6300s and E6400's fair very well on this mobo, while the E6600's seem to require better mobos. Which would yield the highest clock?
 
Well I'm not doing any overclocking, but I just bought an E6600 and a DS3 this weekend. If I was going to O/C, I'd probably have gotten the 6400.

As long as you don't plan on using the built in raid on the 965 chipset you'll be fine.
 
your ability to overclock is mainly going to be determined by the CPU multiplier and your memory, The DS3 lowest memory divider is 1:1 which is listed as 2:1 in the bios.

6300 has a 7x multiplier
6400 has a 8X multiplier

to reach 3.4 GHz you have to run a FSB on the 6300 of 3000/7 = 428
your memory would be running at 856MHz (428 x 2 )


to reach 3.4 GHz you have to run a FSB on the 6400 of 3000/8 = 375
your memory would be running at 750MHz (375 x 2)


If you memory is rated for 800MHz its not difficult to see which processor is less likely to require a FSB that would cause your memory to be the limiting factor in increasing the FSB and Overclocking the CPU .

Whats wrong with the raid ?
Mine works fine and I played with raid 0 raid 1 0+1 and just hooking them up on both controllers before I made my RAID 5.

Just dont use the jmicro drivers on windows update, use the gigabyte ones.

P.S.
I ask because I know the E6300s and E6400's fair very well on this mobo, while the E6600's seem to require better mobos

Well i ask this question based on what I have seen. It seems that people who use a 965 chipset mobo seem to have better luck overclocking the "allendales". Those who try to go with a 965 chipset and a E6600, tend to not be able to hit as high a clock. Thus the creation of this thread. I'd be pleased with about a 3ghz or more clock on either chip, since the performance value of the extra cache is still debateable, I just want the cpu that will maximize my clockspeed on a DS3, or possibly P5b deluxe.
 
the principle (and math) is the same and the 6600 has even a higher mulitplier.

seems like on air 3.4 3.5 is about the limit on air and most much lower around 3.2. You have to factor in that some chips of the same family are better by luck of the draw and toss out the Water Cooling and phase change stuff unless you are going there.

Unless you have money to burn, and some people do :) , it then becomes a price vs performance issue. I dont have money to burn so the 6300 was the best value for me as I can come very close to the max overclock of any allendale/conroe for $183 where as going with the 6600 might get me another 2 or 3 hundred MHz, say up to the 3.6 GHz but the cpu costs $320

The 6600 has a 2MB cache and in some applications that is good for a few % of performance increase.

Go with the 6600 it wont stress your ram as much. But its still the luck of the draw.
 
The 6600 has a 4MB cache. And newer ones (week 26+) are hitting 3.6 on high-end air.
 
The performance increase of a greater cache really isn't debateable, the 4MB chips will perform faster than the 2MB chips. It's really a matter of determaining whether the price premium is worth the average 5%-10% increase.
 
On the other hand some feel the larger cache reduces the chance of a good overclock. /shrug,

and i was talking per core on the cache. hmm didnt really express that too well tho.
 
C2D cache isn't separated by core, it works differently than a64 and p4's. The cache is shared. That's one of the main advantages of the architecture actually.

The new 4mb conroes overclock great.
 
The DS3 doesn't like the 6600 processors too much, it has cold boot issues and a crappy FSB wall. The 6300/6400 chips overclock to nearly the same and don't have as many issues. If I had it do do over again I would either get a cheaper processor or else waited another week so I had enough cash on hand for a 975 board.

Really? Try plugging in 2 sata drives for raid (0 or 1), and have a dvd-burner (ide). You'll find the optical drive throws lots of errors in the eventlog, and burning will become impossible. Or maybe it's just several of the boards owned by people that frequent this site. (there's a few threads on this now)

It seems to work just fine for me so far (other than that flakey IDE controller). However I'm also on my 2nd DS3 board (1st one had all kinds of issues and was returned).

The IDE controller is fine, it's the drivers from windows update that are flakey. I uninstalled those drivers and replaced em with generic XP IDE drivers and it works fine again.
I am being a bit harsh on the board's overclocking ability, it is good for a mild/moderate overclock, pretty close to the limits of air cooling. With high end water I want more than moderate OC however. I can't max out my potential overclock on this board. It all boils down to budget, if I had an extra $100 to spend when I bought my hardware I could have bought a board that would gain me an extra 100-300 mhz over what I get now. In turn, my 6600 only overclocks 100-200mhz more than the 6300 and 6400 models do on this board.
In short, it depends on how far into the diminishing returns curve you want to spend yourself into.
 
from an e6600 & DS3 owner, (me) I'd say go with a 6400. They seem to do much better on the DS3's than the 6600's. The problem is the 6600's when overclocked put you right in the FSB hole between 330-400 where things are hard to overclock. Where the 6300/6400's usually reach 400FSB so you get past the "FSB hole"

The graph shows the sweet spots for the Northbridge are around 333 & 400. At least as far as I've seen people hitting stable set ups. They often can overclock around 333 / 400 but not much above those.
 
I would agree with Chris6969. If I had it to do over again, I probably would've bought a 6400 instead of the 6300 that I bought. I just happened to get a 6300 that won't go over 2.8GHz stable. I can boot into windows higher, but I inevitably get errors in prime, hard lockups, and other odd behavior. The good news is that I'm doing it on stock voltage with the stock cooler and my temps are decent...about 60-62 with two instances of folding@home running...one for each core.

Once the quad cores come out and people start getting rid of their old chips, I will probably buy a e6600 that is gauranteed to do 400 x 9 :) Giving me an upgrade of 800MHz.

NOTE: new F7 BIOS removes that limitation

I'm currently running at 7 x 429=3Ghz with my e6600 on the new BIOS (vs. 9 x 333=3Ghz before)

e6600 + ds3 owners, download this BIOS, lower your multiplier and crank the FSB up. You should be able to hit your old overclock, but at a much higher FSB = faster performance! :)
 
i think what was going on with the s-3,ds-3 and other 965p mb's as well--- was that with the north bridge strap tied to the default multi of the cpu . the 965p's would run out of strap causing the NB to run out spec -causing a limiting factor for overclocking with 9x multi and above core 2's . that's why the 6300& 6400's could do more than a higher multi 6600 generally on the 965p chipset.

the new bios IF it removes the dependcy on the DEFAULT multi for the north bridge strap should fix this problem and the 6600,6700 and 6800 should overclock as well as their cheeper counterparts .

i would test this--however i only have a 6300 and 6400 to test with . and the 4300 is looking better all the time--lol :cool:

Not sure if thats whats going on, but yes, now I can boot at all kinds of different FSB's. There have been a bunch of theories.

I think with Core 2 there's something locking the default multi value in at least during the boot up (with the older BIOS's). Even now with the F7 after I lower the multiplier, Orthos, 3dMark, CoreTemp, & several other programs still read the CPU speed as if it was at the default multiplier (ie: much higher)

I can boot at speeds like 400x8, 450x7, where before I could not even boot at 6x400. I ran Orthos overnight at 429x7 = 3Ghz.

Later today I will test 375x8, which should perform better as according to Anandtech the 1333 FSB strap kicks in at 401 and decreases performance somewhat.
 
i think the issue with the ds3's and e6600+ is power consumption. 3 different ds3's have met my e6400, and they all seem to not gained much speed past 1.47v. Even with temps in check, its not stable. With my fist ds3, vdroop was around .6v. The second was not as bad, only .3v, but still could not do much better than 3.6hgz with only 1.5v to the cpu.

I also put an 805D, overclokced to 4.1ghz and saw droop of about 1v. Thats a damn clear sign of this board not being able to deliver enough power, especially with its puny 3 phase power and HORRIBLE placement of mosfets.

My p5b and 805D, on the otherhand, would only droop about .3v @ the same 4.1ghz. So its not a p965 issue, its a Ds3 and lack of power issue.
 
I tried a DS4 and I thought it wasnt that bad but I have to say this that the BIOS,s have made it what it is , the chipset was always cpable but to many complications like Dual Bios and quad Bios and features like that made things really bad in the beginning.

Also the board mad by mentok reflects this and helps people to look into the possibilities a board would bring.

Thats what I originally thought, that maybe the extra 2Mb of cache pushes the e6600/6700 to instability around 3.0-3.2Ghz on the DS3's.

But NOW I think it has more to do with the 6600/6700 overclocking right in to the FSB hold between 350ish - 400, AND complicating that problem was that there was some issue with the multiplier not being set properly at boot (or somewhere) b/c I couldn't boot at settings like 6x401 which were just stock CPU speed.

Now with F7 the multiplier issue is gone.
