I've sat in the background and read through out the forum and I want to thank you guys for your knowledge. My questions are:

I am NOT an overclocker, primarilly heavy application, mp3 & video encoding. Basically a Home Theater PC. In my case would it make a huge difference in the E6400 vs E6600. I have all of my PC parts except the CPU, the thing is I ACTUALLY SEE the 6400 in stock at a few spots.

Which one would you guys purchase in my case??

Thanks guys,

Your opinions means a lot. :D

If you don't overclock it you are not using it too its full potential and you would basically be throwing money away.

E6600! If you aren't going to OC the thing then buy the fastest proc you can afford. That 4MB cache will help in the stuff you do.

I have tried both cpu's , well i have tried one E6300 and i have bought one E6600 now which i have but no mobo to try it on but that said i have overclocked the E6300 to 2.4ghz which is the stock speed of my new processor and honestly 2.4ghz is really really good .

Just one example when you are loading up you have a disk inside your DVDrom and when windows start the cd that was in your dvdrom is already waiting for you. Uaually you have other things loading up but because they are two cores one starts to read from the rom and one from the hardrive , i have also got a pentiumd 930@4.2ghz and i have never seen that happen.

Also if your going to be downloading and watching movies too.If you have a choice and you can then why dont you?

I have overclocked a quite a few CPU's and i have never seen that ever. I would advise you the 2.4ghz and you know something i have found the conroe the easiest processor to overclock.

Its your call , i cant wait to see my cpu overclocked to

You might not be an overclocker, but these procs are so easy to do so! E6600 if your going to be encoding and everything if you leave it stock!

Hijak time (sorry!)..
I'm also looking at getting one of the E6300's and I too am not an OCer. This is probably a really dumb question but if I did decide to have a bash at OCing it I'd need a better mobo and ram than I'm looking at getting wouldn't I?
(motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131545 (pcb rev 2.0 will work according to the Asus webstie),
and memory: http://www.nintek.com.au/x/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=6432 (can't find a better link sorry).)
I only ask because, well, I can't really afford to start buying crazy expensive motherboards and ram and just wanna know if i'm going to blow everything up (or can even attempt it) if I try it with what i'm getting.
:p

Check that on your board you are allowed to chage the chipset voltager , which is very important when overclcoking a e6300 .

You will hit a wall at about 340FSB and for you to go higher than that you will need to put the northbridge voltage(MCH).

Also you can pick xms DDR800 at the price your paying , search a little harder , i am from the uk and it costs me £20 for the ddr800 at the latency you have chose ddr667 .

The ram is very important in overclcocking the Conroe you will see. For example the ram i chose only ran at 660mhz and are rated 667mhz. When overclcoking the conroe you set your ram at 533mhz to 1:1 and work yourself up to when you get near what your ram is rated at which i advice you to buy ddr800 , you will potentially see about 300-500mhz difference for a little more money.

If you get stuck pm me.

Okay, after a bit more research I found:
1. Motherboard Model ASUS P5LD2-VM
2. Socket Type LGA775
3. Chipset Intel 945G
4. FSB adjustable? Yes. Range 100-400
5. RAM speed adjustable? Yes Range 400Mhz-667Mhz
6. RAM timings adjustable? Yes.
7. Vcore adjustable? Yes Range 1.2875 - 1.7v
8. VDimm adjustable? Yes Range 1.812 or 1.904v only.
9. Chipset Voltage adjustable? Yes, MCH only. Range 1.5, 1.6v, or 1.7v
10. PCI Bus lock? Yes. 33.3Mhz, 36.3Mhz, 40.0Mhz
11. PCIeX Bus adjustable? Yes Range] 90-150
12. PCIeX Voltage adjustable? No.

So it can be done.. but the adjustable RAM speed... that means that there's no point getting anything over 667MHz right?

And as to the XMS RAM.. I can get it cheaper than the one I'm getting now if I get 1gb instead of 2gb (I _really_ can't afford the 2gb of xms). So would it be even worth it if I'm going to lose a gig of RAM in my attempt to overclock? Or would I just be better off getting the 2gig value stuff and just leaving everything as is?

Thanks for your help! And sorry again for hijacking your thread kayizm007.

Try and find aboard that supports ddr800 cos the last speed of your ram will be near that , also try and get the cheapest ddr800 , it just makes it that little easier when you are overclocking.

When you start to overclock you will set ram :fsb=1:1 and put your ram at 533mhz , you will then slowly work yourself up towards your final overclocks and you will see that this gets to maybe 820mhz .

So its just that yopu get the most out of your cpu but that said the power i saw from aa E6300 just at 2.3ghz was mindblowing and if you see more than this with what you are going to buy , i promise you will not stop talking about it , it is amazingly fast.
